I don’t know if this properly belongs in the ‘sources’ topic; if it does I
\nhope someone will put it there. I just received something called “The Whole
\nToon Catalog” and it is 48 pages of available-for-purchase videotapes of
\nnothing but animation. Now be advised that this is legally purchasable stuff;
\nnone of it is bootleg (which we all know exists in quantity). But it does
\nrun from “Abel’s Island” to “Zoom the White Dolphin” (neither of which I’ve
\never heard of); there’s a load of Beany and Cecil stuff, Betty Boop, Bugs
\nBunny (uncut), lots and lots of collections of esoteric stuff. It’s not
\nexhaustive; it doesn’t have, for example, the Asterix movies – but it is a
\ngood source for lots of titles. Just the thing for culturally deprived

For all those feeling abandoned on this side of the PAL\/NTSC -fence:<\/p>\n

Network of European anime fans (sorry, no ‘official’ name that I know of)
\nhave been established. The network is trying to help anime fans to get
\nin touch with each, build contacts, etc. Although European -based, everyone
\nis welcomed to join in, that is, there is no discrimination on country basis.<\/p>\n

The network publishs a newsletter, coming out bimonthly. Subscription is
\n6 pounds (UK) per year for European, and about 10 to others (includes air
\nmail). In every issue a contact list of anime fans is published, and at least
\nfirst issue contained other useful addresses were published. Contributions
\nare badly needed.<\/p>\n

I’m going to be in Hollywood next week and will check out the bookstores

\nI’ve seen a couple of issues of a new, slim, flippant monthly that’s
\ngeared toward merchandising, and thus full of animation news. “Index” is
\nput out by Fairchild Publications in NYC. Each issue is arranged so that
\nthe articles are in alphabetical order; a cute gimmick that makes reading the
\nissue a serendipitous adventure. This issue (with its cover showing Batman and
\nPocahontas smooching) includes “A: Animation – frame and fortune” (the article
\nfurnished a list of upcoming projects that I put into the “silver screen”
\ntopic), “G:Gargoyles” (a look at Disney’s SatAM series and its spinoffs), and
\n“R:Retail” which has more stuff about Pocahontas’s ancillaries. The first
\nissue of this that I saw had a cool interview with Quentin Tarentino, where
\nhe expounded on how he wanted to see PULP FICTION lunchboxes and board games.

\nTITLE: When in Paris
\nI located a wonderful store in Paris that is part of a chain but this
\nlocation deals exclusively in comics. They have an astounding collection
\nof comic books (which in France are real books, i.e. hard bound), comic
\nrelated merchandise (more Tintin figurines than I have ever seen before),
\nand a nice collection of posters.<\/p>\n

I picked up a collection of one-page gags from the truly demented
\nmind of Ptiluc. It is called Faces de Rat and defies description. The
\ncover art is of three rats giggling hysterically while reading a discarded
\ncopy of Albert Camus’ La Peste.<\/p>\n

I also brought home a copy of a new book by Hugo Pratt called “Saint-
\nExupery, Le Dernier Vol” (The Last Flight). It’s a wonderful tribute to
\nthe author of “The Little Prince.”<\/p>\n
