{"id":105,"date":"2005-10-09T13:25:04","date_gmt":"2005-10-09T17:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.harrymccracken.com\/hgr\/?p=105"},"modified":"2005-10-09T13:25:04","modified_gmt":"2005-10-09T17:25:04","slug":"smurfs-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harrymccracken.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/09\/smurfs-under-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Smurfs Under Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<table Align=left>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"smurfs.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harrymccracken.com\/blog\/archives\/smurfs.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"126\" border=1\/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>This sounds like a tasteless-but-funny flight of fancy at The Onion, but it&#8217;s apparently legit: The Belgian arm of UNICEF has produced an anti-war public-service message which shows the Smurf village being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/2005\/10\/08\/wsmurf08.xml&#038;sSheet=\/news\/2005\/10\/08\/ixhome.html\">devastated by warplanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Said an account director for the ad agency responsible for the commercial: &#8220;We wanted something that was real war&#8211;Smurfs losing arms, or a Smurf losing a head&#8211;but they said no.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is fascinating, but I think it&#8217;s impossible to have a well-informed opinion on it without seeing the ad. I&#8217;m assuming I&#8217;m not the only cartoon nut who, upon reading of it, thought of Hugh Harman&#8217;s <em>Peace on Earth<\/em>.
