{"id":70,"date":"2005-07-02T15:49:46","date_gmt":"2005-07-02T19:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.harrymccracken.com\/hgr\/?p=70"},"modified":"2005-07-02T15:49:46","modified_gmt":"2005-07-02T19:49:46","slug":"will-eisner-and-scrappy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harrymccracken.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/02\/will-eisner-and-scrappy\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Eisner and Scrappy"},"content":{"rendered":"<table Align=left>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"eisnerscrappy.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harrymccracken.com\/blog\/archives\/eisnerscrappy.jpg\" width=\"239\" height=\"113\"\n border=1\/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Every time I&#8217;m foolish enough to think I&#8217;ve discovered all the important facts about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrappyland.com\">Scrappy<\/a>, something comes along to remind me how little I really know.<\/p>\n<p>The latest example is a humdinger: I&#8217;ve just learned (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtsco.com\/sg.htm\">from comic-strip expert Allan Holtz<\/a>) that the 1937 <em>Editor &#038; Publisher Yearbook <\/em>included a listing for a Scrappy comic strip (credited, of course, to Charles Mintz) that was syndicated by Eisner &#038; Iger Associates&#8230;the Eisner in question being a very young Will Eisner.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear whether this strip ever saw publication&#8211;or, in fact, if it was ever actually produced. And we don&#8217;t know whether Will himself had a hand in writing and\/or drawing it. If I&#8217;d learned this a year ago, I would have tracked down Eisner at the San Diego Con and asked him myself; sadly, that&#8217;s no longer an option.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, one other thing: This was the <em>second <\/em>Scrappy newspaper feature. The first, <em>Scrappy Sayings<\/em>, appeared in small papers in 1935. I haven&#8217;t seen that one either.
