TITLE: _Crusader Rabbit_ on video
Two people have told me they’ve seen _Crusader Rabbit_ cartoons
available on el cheapo videotapes, but I’ve yet to see them
myself. Has anyone here actually seen such tapes, and can they
tell me if they’re the Jay Ward ones or the later version produced
by another studio (the former would be in black-and-white, the
latter should be in color)? Any Boston-area BIXen who could point
me to a store around here that was actually selling the tapes would
be doing me a special favor.

TITLE: Cartoons in Spanish
While browsing in Woolworth’s today, hoping to come upon the Crusader
Rabbit tapes I mentioned earlier in this topic, I found a bunch of
chep PD tapes in the Cartoon Superstar series, a line of crummy tapes
I’ve seen at Woolworth’s before. The difference this time was that
the packaging for the tapes- which included Little Lulu, Casper,
Babyuey, and similar titles — was all in Spanish. The tapes were
five bucks apiece, but a sneaking suspicion that they might just be
cartoons in English inside a Spanish-language case kept me from
buying any, at least for the moment.
Has anybody seen these? Do you know if they’re recently-dubbed cartoons,
or ones that were released in Spanish back when they were made? If
the latter is true, they could be quite interesting.

I know of the existence of some Spanish-dubbed cartoons that
Channel 47 in New York used to show, but none from the Paramount
studio. They had Mighty Mouse theatricals, Hanna-Barbera New
Cartoon Series (Wally Gator, etc.) and the ever-popular Batfink.
I believe these were all overdubbed in Mexico, quite badly. If
you listen carefully to the soundtracks of these, you can hear
the original voice track faintly beneath. I don’t envision that
there was ever a theatrical market for this sort of stuff, so I
would assume these dubbings were done for television stations.
More recently the New York Spanish stations are showing
Spanish-track DIC cartoons like “C.O.P.S.” and “Beverly Hills
Teens,” a series which I believe has never been mentioned in the
Animation conference before, but not for lack of trying. 🙂

TITLE: Jungle Book
Picked up a copy of the videotape at Crown Books in downtown D.C. for an
amazing $16.89. I have been waiting for the Disney release for
years. I’m real pleased to add this to the collection. While I don’t
think this does any justice at all to Kipling’s original story and
overall the film is mediocre, there are some very inspired moments and
some wonderful songs.

This is one I’m going to have to get myself, too, and for the

Phil Harris.
If you’re looking for reasonably authentic Kipling
adventures in animation, try Chuck Jones’ trilogy of “The White

they’re all on tape.)

The Jones Kipling specials are closer to Kipling than Disney’s

a dead ringer for Wile E. Coyote (Jones did the same thing when

TITLE: Magoo videos
Here’s an exact breakdown of the contents of Paramount Home Video’s Mr. Magoo
tapes:
“The Mr. Magoo Show,” Vols. 1-4, each contain five UPA cartoons from the
1960-1961 production, at $9.95 each.
“What’s New Mr. Magoo,” Vols. 1-3, each contain two half-hour episodes
from the 1978 DePatie-Freleng series, at $12.95 each.
“Mr. Magoo’s Literary Classics” each contain two half-hour episodes of
“The Famous Adventures Of Mr. Magoo” from 1964. (Bob McKimson worked on
some of these, for you Warner Bros. completists.) They’re all $12.95 each.
“Uncle Sam Magoo” is the famous special from 1970, at $12.95.
Finally, “Gerald McBoing Boing” is a six-tape set of segments from “The
Gerald McBoing Boing Show” produced for CBS in the 1950’s. There are tapes
devoted to Dusty Of The Circus and The Twirliger Twins. These are $9.95 each.
All told, this comprehensive video release of Mr. Magoo encompasses 20
volumes — possibly one of the largest mass releases of any animation
studio’s work to home video. (And Paramount’s not done yet — the final seven
volumes of “Dick Tracy” cartoons are soon to be released, completing that
series.)

Well, RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video did release a good portion of the 50’s
UPA library, both Magoos and unusual one-shots. They can still be found in
some rental shops and are required just as a point of reference to gauge the
rapid decline of UPA in the 60’s.
There really has been a dearth of Charles Mintz and later stuff
available — and I think some of that stuff would go over well with
today’s audiences, particularly the Frank Tashlin years, when he had an
almost entirely ex-Disney staff. (I myself am curious about this work, as
it’s sort of a stylistic bridge between his two directorial tours at Warner
Bros., and we know that Tash made some very stylish cartoons in both stints.)

I am too lazy to check all the back posts, but has there been

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle was one of my favorite
cartoons, mainly because of the zanny way the stories fit together,
the alternate titles (some are classic) and the slightly derranged
mind of “our heros.” Each video runs about 45 min and includes
runs of the Dudley DoRight clips, Fractured Fairy Tales (these are
hilarious), and (the great Peabody’s time to shine) Mr. Peabody
and Sherman. *Anyone* out there in animation land would love these
tapes, brought back some memories and some good laughs. TINAR

I was walking by that Woolworth’s where I had seen videotapes of
Spanish-language cartoons a few weeks ago, and my curiosity and
a 20%-off-everything sale that happened to be going on today
compelled me to invest $4.11 in a copy of _El Patito Huey y
Amigos_, one of these tapes. As I suspected, the dub job seems
to have been done for the tapes (or at least recently), rather
than back when the cartoons were made. At least that’s what I
deduce from the fact that the tape has cartoons from more than
one studio, but the voice artists (or artist; it may be one guy,
a la Mel Blanc) are the same on all the cartoons.
As the title suggests even to those of us who don’t speak Spanish,
the featured cartoon stars Baby Huey — _Quack a Doodle Doo_,
which seems to be his first cartoon (Dave?). The dub job on
this and the other cartoons on the tape isn’t bad; the original
soundtrack has been maintained except for the voices, and though
they all seem to be done by one Spanish-speaking man without
much vocal flexibility, they’re well-synched to the lip movements.
The next cartoon on the tape is _Tinta y El Pajaro Minah_ —
in English, _Inki and the Minah Bird_. Those who have seen this
fine Chuck Jones short may remember that it’s done completely
in pantomime, thereby saving the producers of this videotape
from having to dub it.
Next comes _El Toreador Timido_, aka _The Timid Toreador_, a
Porky Pig cartoon directed by Bob Clampett. There’s relatively
little dialogue here, though the voice artist does a game job
of emulating Porky Pig’s stutter.
The last cartoon on the tape is _Franjas Para Siempre_ (or _Bars
and Stripes Forever_ in English), a Warner Bros. cartoon set in
a prison populated by dogs. This probably has the most dialogue
of any cartoons on the tape, and it’s a cartoon I’m glad to have,
in any language — I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before.
In short, the tape was worth the small amount of money I asked
for it, and it’s not a ripoff — or at least no more of a ripoff
than any el cheapo cartoon tape is. The dubbing seems competent
enough, at least as far as a non-Spanish speaker like your
obedient servant can judge.

Well since you asked, “Quack-A-Doodle Do” is the first Huey cartoon; note
creator Marty Taras’ story credit. And since you didn’t ask, may I just add
that “The Timid Toreador” was a joint effort of Bob Clampett and Norm McCabe;
it was one of two cartoons McCabe and Clampett directed together before the
original Stormin’ Norman got his own unit in 1941.
I would presume that the version of “Timid Toreador” is the recolored

“Shame Of The Jungle,” an adult animated Tarzan parody, will hit video racks
sometime in June courtesy of JEF Films. The voice cast includes the late John

“Saturday Night Live” at one time or another.

TITLE: Disney scoreboard
Vince Staten, in today’s New York Daily News, has an article about Disney’s
homevideo strategy of putting titles on sale and then withdrawing them.
Here’s a status report on all of the Disney features, not counting the more
episodic features of the mid-late 40’s.
“Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs,” “Fantasia,” “101 Dalmatians,” “The
Aristocats,” “The Rescuers,” and “Oliver And Company” have never been
released to home video. (Staten failed to mention that “The Fox And The
Hound,” “The Black Cauldron,” and “The Great Mouse Detective” haven’t been
released to video either. Not that anyone asked… Nor has “The Rescuers
Down Under,” which with “Fantasia” are rumored to be Christmas releases.)
“Pinocchio,” “Lady And The Tramp,” and “Sleeping Beauty” are all on
moratorium but are relatively difficult to find sale copies of. You will have
better luck with “Bambi,” “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan” and “The Little Mermaid,”
the latter two of which just went on the moratorium roster April 1.
“Dumbo,” “Alice In Wonderland” and “The Sword In The Stone” are still in
print and readily available.
“Robin Hood” is being reissued July 12 after a four-year hiatus,
possibly to coincide with the new big screen version starring Kevin Costner.
And “The Jungle Book,” of course, just went on sale and is available
just about everywhere you look.

UPA is “United Productions of America”, an animation firm that was
started in the early 1940s with a bunch of ex-Disney talent. Its most famous
animation character is “Mr. Magoo”. It also made the feature length “Gay
Purr-ee” in 1962. — Steve

…UPA also made the Gerald Mc Boing Boing cartoons, as well as some
artsy-type cartoons like adaptations of James Thurber’s “The
Unicorn in the Garden” (actually they did a great job on that
one) and “Rooty Toot Toot,” a retelling of the Frankie and Johnnie
story. The studio’s first cartoon was “Hell-Bent For Election,”
a political film made to advance FDR’s re-election in 1944.
That cartoon was directed by Chuck Jones. It’s appropriate that
we’re discussing UPA in the wake of the fiftieth anniversary of
the Disney strike, as many of the founders of the studio were
Disney strikers, and the whole UPA style was a reaction to the
realism of Disney animation at the time.

The Magoo tapes are indeed out, in fact, I just picked up one of the “What’s
New Mr. Magoo” volumes, further demonstrating my blind loyalty to anything
produced by the DePatie-Freleng studio.
The first tape has a labeling error. The cartoons listed are “Who’s Zoo
Magoo,” “Museum Magoo,” “Magoo’s Monster Mansion” and “Mountain Man Magoo.”
The cartoons actually are “Come Back Little McBarker,” “Magoo’s Fountain Of
Youth,” “Roamin Magoo,” and “Miniature Magoo.” Anyone know if these episodes
are from another volume in the series?
Transfer is up to Paramount’s usual good standard, and complete
production credits for the series appear at the end of each pair of stories
(and they reveal some segments to be written by veteran Disney/Lantz writer
Milt Schaffer).

TITLE: Interesting discovery
I wasn’t aware that there’s a manufacturer of public domain cartoon videos
not far from where I live. An outfit called Royal Sound Video Productions,
based in Eatontown, New Jersey, has a series of PD tapes out with the best
packaging jobs I’ve ever seen on this class of video: a line drawing
reproduction of the featured cartoon on the tape, and below it, little still
frames from the other cartoons. These tapes are worth searching out since
some of them have suppressed material not seen on current TBS/TNT versions of
certain cartoons (like “Have You Got Any Castles” or “Flop Goes The Weasel”).
I’ve driven by Royal Sound’s offices for years, not knowing what the
heck they did. Now I know.
This may or may not be the same company as Starmaker Productions, also
headquartered in Eatontown, New Jersey (they have a rather large industrial
park), who put out a tape called “50 Greatest Cartoons.”

TITLE: _Crusader Rabbit_
Rhino Video has recently released at least two volumes — or
two “Crusades,” as they dub them — of the original Jay Ward
_Crusader Rabbit_ cartoons. (Another company has alreadyreleased some of the later, color, non-Ward Crusader cartoons,
but these new tapes are the very early, black-and-white ones.)
For the uninitiated, Crusader and his pal, Rags the Tiger, were
prototypes for Ward’s later Rocky and Bullwinkle in many ways.
_Crusader Rabbit_ was the first animated series produced
for television; its production values are so low that
it’s just *barely* animation. There are lots of held
drawings, and when characters speak they tend to turn their
face away from the camera so as to avoid lip
movements.
The writing, however, is utterly charming — like that
of Ward’s later cartoons in many ways, but gentler and a bit
more kid-oriented. Crusader and Rags are
wonderful characters, and it’s good to see them back
in the spotlight after several decades of obscurity.

Run, don’t walk, to your local video store and see if they have a copy of
“Betty Boop Collectors Edition Vol. 1” (Republic 7065, $19.95) for the
original black and white version, or “Best Of Betty Boop, Vol. 1” (Republic
7045, $14.95) for the inferior colorized version. If they don’t have it there
you can order either from Whole Toon Access at (206) 391-8747.
I would advise you to blow the extra five bucks on the “Collectors
Edition” because that tape also includes “The Old Man Of The Mountain,” “I’ll
Be Glad When You’re Dead You Rascal You” and “Bimbo’s Initiation” — the best
of the Betty Boop cartoons all in one place, and all in pristine
black-and-white.

TITLE: Video Xmas specials
Just about every well-known animated Christmas special is out on video. But
somehow, it’s just not the same being able to watch them at will.
A bunch of co-workers and I were watching the 1970 version of “Santa
Claus Is Coming To Town” (produced by Rankin-Bass), and I came to the
conclusion that while such communal viewing on company time is an interesting
diversion, it’s no match for sitting in front of that 23-inch console with
the Christmas tree blinking in the background, at 8 p.m. or so on a cold
December night, complete with commercials. Back then the showing of these
programs was a one time only EVENT. These days, anyone can watch the Grinch
at any time (even in the hot days of summer). And that takes some of the
thrill out of it.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a British cartoon on a public domain video.
Just recently saw one collection from United American Video which includes a
Ginger Nutt cartoon from the late 1940’s entitled “Ginger Nutt’s Christmas
Circus,” produced by GB Animation. The animators at GB appeared to have
learned their lessons from watching Hollywood cartoons, since (except for one
character that had a very British accent) it has the look and feel of a
Hollywood cartoon. The cartoon was quite funny in spots.
The tape (UAV 6002) is rounded out with three Paramount cartoons: “Snow

(1) Early musical cartoons like “I Love To Singa” and “Miss Glory”
(2) First appearances of major characters like “A Wild Hare”
(3) Tex Avery including “Thugs With Dirty Mugs” and “The Bear’s Tale”
(4) Bob Clampett including “A Corny Concerto” and “Kitty Kornered”
(5) Chuck Jones including “The Dover Boys” and “Old Glory”
(6) Friz Freleng including “Pigs In A Polka” and “Tweetie Pie”

(9) “Hollywood Steps Out,” “Coo-Coo Nut Grove” and similar cartoons

sensitive about cartoons with stereotypes. In fact, when the

Also at K-mart: the series of Terrytoons tapes that came out a few years

unlike the Gandy one, it doesn’t hae the original titles and
credits. I’ll probably pick up one or two more of the tapes
(possibly one of Lariat Sam, to get re-acquainted with a character
I liked as a wee tot but haven’t seen since).
One question: the tapes include six cartoons apiece and the boxes
say that the tapes are approximately 30 minutes. That works out
to onlly 5 minutes a cartoon — were Terrytoons really that
short, or are the versions on the tapes cut down?

The cartoons aren’t edited or time compressed, and I think that 30 minutes
might be a conservative estimate. Maybe in the later years, the cartoons were
about five minutes apiece (I have to check on another tape I got with six Sad
Cat cartoons including “Gadmouse The Apprentice Good Fairy,” the first
cartoon ever directed by Ralph Bakshi — a piece of animation history.)
If you can get used to the fact that these tapes are recorded in the EP
mode, they’re a solid value otherwise. Cartoons aren’t duplicated from tape
to tape.

Streamline Pictures, best know for their theatrical and video releases

The term I have heard is “laser rot.”
There was a lot of talk about this a few years ago, and many people were
concerned since the technology that is used to make video discs is the
same as that used in manufacturing CDs, which were just taking off at the
time.
If I remember correctly, there was a problem with some early video
discs–the two halves of the plastic sandwich enclosing the metal
(aluminum, I think) layer were imperfectly joined and/or contaminated
with chemicals. This caused the aluminum layer to begin to oxidate.
Over time, this would have led to the disappearance of the encoded
program material.
My impression is that this was a problem affecting only some early
video discs, and the manufacturing process has been corrected.

Well, I’ve got musical CDs that are 7 years old, and show neither physical
signs of degradation (other than minor scuffing I’ve caused by handling), nor
any audible difference. I’m not sure how long CDs have been around, but I
got into it pretty early, so they can’t have too much long-term data avaiable
yet.
BTW…you can bring scratched or scruffed CDs back to life quite easily. I
assume the technique would work equally well for a video disk, but I don’t
have laser video equipment, so I’m not sure. I’ve scratched some CDs pretty
deeply, and always been able to recover them 100%.
For minor scratches, you can just polish the disk with Johnson’s paste wax
(the kind for your car), or a similar product. Make sure it’s a real wax,
not one of those space-age acrylic polishes. For deep scratches, I use
DuPont Rubbing Compound #7 (the red kind). I use a Q-tip, and put just a
very tiny amount of the compound on the end of it, and buff it in (gently)
with small circular motions over the scratch. Rinse it in plain water, and
you should have a milky-looking patch where the scratch used to be. If you
can still see the scratch, do it again, perhaps applying a wee bit more
pressure. If you can see distinct scratches from your pass with the rubbing
compound, do it again, using less compound and lighter pressure, until you
end up with the hazy/milky look where the scratch used to be. Once you get
it looking milky, polish it with paste wax until it shines like new. It may
take two or 3 polish/buff cycles to remove the milky look and get a like-new
shine. If you had to buff out a deep scratch, you may never get a like-new
shine, there may always be some visible micro-scratches from the rubbing
compound. But, the disk will still play like new even if you can see a tiny
bit of milkiness left from the rubbing compound.
Remember, you’re working on the clear plastic protective coating, you’re
nowhere near the data itself, so it’s hard to really ruin a disk by polishing
it. Beside, if the disk is scratched badly enough that it’s skipping, you
can hardly make it worse; you’ve got nothing to lose. 🙂

This is the only tape Disney has tried the blackmail scheme with. They
seem to love to tamper with _Fantasia_ — ten years ago, they replaced

to the old soundtrack and restored the visuals. Deems Taylor’s narration

I was wondering how hard it would be to rerecord the music. On the one
hand, it would be tough to get the tempo of the music exactly as it needs
to be for the visuals. (Or so it seems to me, a layman by any measure.)
But on the other hand, with live-action films the music goes on after the
visuals are down, so it must be possible.

As Harry alluded to in his previous message, there was an entirely new
soundtrack recorded for the film’s 1980 reissue, by Irwin Kostal. Needless to
say it didn’t go over too well with the purists, but some people probably
enjoyed the updated sounds.
It is possible to post-synch an animated film — that is, do the
drawings first and then do the soundtrack to match the pictures. The
Fleischers did it all the time, projecting the cartoon action on a screen as
the orchestra, sound effects and voice people did it all in one take. This
sort of synchronization is possible when you realize that most action in
animated films is worked out in some multiple of a divisor of 24 — 1×24,
2×12, 3×8, or 4×6 (and vice versa), and that mechanical devices can be
created that can beat out the proper tempo in click form so that the
musicians can be in proper synch.

TITLE: Three Disney Features on Video
Buena Vista Home Video has announced plans to release three more
Disney animated features on home video by year’s end. The *big*
news is that _Beauty and the Beast_ will be released on home video
on October 30th. But more surprisingly, it will be preceded by
_The Great Mouse Detective_ on July 17th and _The Rescuers_ sometime
in September. All three releases will retail for $24.99. This
leaves only a few Disney animated features that have never been
available on video — _Snow White_, _The Aristocats_ and _Oliver
& Company_ are the ones that come to mind.
In other Disney video news, the company has acquired home video
rights to _Alvin and the Chipmunks_, and also plans three tapes
of Goofy cartoons for release in July.

Wow, I’ll have to keep my eyes open for that. Of course, there’s every
chance that I’ve seen all the ones they’ve package together, probably
several times.
The quality of Fractured Fairy Tales has always amazed me, in terms of
the variability. Some of them are well-drawn and colored (at least, as
well as the Bullwinkle sequences that surround them). Others are hastily
sketched line drawings dabbed over with blobs of color that don’t even
vaguely follow the sketched lines. (This is mostly in backgrounds, foreground
characters are usually more detailed.) After watching a bunch of them, you
get the idea that there are two distinct styles of fractured tales. I don’t
even find the hastily-sketched backgrounds unpleasing, it’s really more
just a stylistic difference to me now. (I did dislike them at first.)

One of my favorite FFTs is one of the blob-colored-background ones, the
story of (er, perhaps better to say “an interpretation of”) Tom Thumb. At
one point you see a quick, strange flash on the screen. If you go through
it at slow motion on the video tape, you see a post-it sort of note on
the screen that says “Cut here, back 3 frames”. 🙂

Casper The Friendly Ghost, long a staple of public-domain video presentations
(particularly his earliest reels such as “There’s Good Boos Tonight” and “The
Friendly Ghost”), will be featured in three new homevideo releases.
The tapes, to be priced at $9.95 each, will each feature four cartoons
from the 1950’s Casper theatrical series. Promotional material for these
tapes note that picture and soundtrack have been restored to their original
condition and will include original (possibly Paramount) main and end titles.
(The current Casper television package mismatches beautifully restored
pictures with an awful synthesized music score and dull voices and sound
effects.)
The 1970’s Hanna-Barbera Casper, with Julie McWhirter Dees voicing the
Ghost, had been released by Worldvision Home Video, but has since been
withdrawn.

The first three of six Casper videos has been released by MCA/Universal Home

“Casper’s Halloween,” “Casper’s Animal Friends” and “Casper’s Travels”
each feature four original cartoons from the 1950’s and 1960’s with original
music and voice tracks. The picture and sound quality is outstanding, but the
titles and opening music aren’t quite all there. But for the revisionist
Harvey regime of Jeffrey A. Montgomery to promote original soundtracks after
poorly redubbing all of his Casper cartoons for television syndication is
clearly a step in the right direction.

video itself is $15.97 and the collectors box set is $97.50, which includes
CD soundtrack, “Making Of” video and other goodies. QVC will ship these out
on October 31, which means you could get yours well in advance of the nominal
street date.

Disney usually releases its animated films on laserdisc some months

masters for pirates to run off copies from. I’m sure _Beauty_ will

TITLE: Popeye music axes?
Am I nuts, or has anyone else noticed…
At the beginning of older Fleischer Popeye cartoons, during
the opening theme, is there a measure of music cut out?
It’s hard to describe, but it usually seems to be one of
the last “wah wah wahhh” talking trombone measures, and
sometimes the cut is not very clean. I can’t say if there
is an accompanying picture cut, but there probably is.
My kids watch TNT Toons weekday mornings, and today the
omission sorta struck me, as if I’d heard it a lot and
just not noticed it.

TITLE: _The Compleat Tex Avery_
The multi-disk laser disk collection of every MGM Tex Avery cartoon is
out, and it’s great — probably good enough to justify the purchase
of a laser disk player. (I’m still pondering the issue myself; I
watched the set at a friend’s house.)
The set includes several cartoons that have rarely, if ever, been
shown on TV, such as _The Blitz Wolf_ and _Uncle Tom’s Cabana_,
as well as two rare Cinemascope remakes of earlier Avery films.
Other cartoons which do get shown on TV in edited form are complete
on the disks, although at least one cartoon — _Droopy’s Good Deed_ —
appears to have a gag cut out. In any event, this is great stuff
and worth every penny of the $100.00 cost for research purposes alone.

TITLE: God Bless Us, Everyone
Richard Williams’ 1970 adaptation of _A Christmas Carol_ is a legendary piece
of animation, but it’s been rarely shown on TV and not available on videotape
since its first airing. That’s happily changed for this Christmas; Goodtimes
Video has released it on a tape which I picked up at a local discount house
for a cool $3.99.
Goodtimes, the kings of deceptive packaging, have put it in a case that
features a brightly-colored painting of an elfin, cutesy-poo Scrooge.
Be not deceived — Williams’ film is done in an excellent, neo-Victorian
style that’s limited in color range and captures the harshness of the
times very well. (The film’s credits include the names of such Warner
Bros. veterans as Chuck Jones, Ken Harris, and Abe Levitow, but this
is asombre and utterly faithful adaptation of the Dickensstory —
I didn’t laugh once, nor did I expect to.)
If there’s a problem, it’s that the film, at thirty minutes, is at leastr
ten minutes’ short of sufficient time to tell the whole story. Several
sections are rushed, and it ends abruptly. Still, this is one of the
best _Christmas Carols_ of them all, up there with the Alastair Sim
live-action film. (Sim does the voice of Scrooge here, too, and
Michael Redgrave narrates.) Shame on Goodtimes for recording it in
long-play mode, which saves them money but makes the picture and
sound more than a little fuzzy.

TITLE: _Mickey Mouse: The Black and White Years_
Wow! This multiple-disc laserdisc set is certainly the neatest video product
I’ve seen in a long time. It includes more than four hours’ worth of
original, untampered-with, gloriously monochrome Mickey Mouse cartoons,
from the first (_Steamboat Willie_) to the last (_Mickey’s Service Station_).
There are several bonuses, including a rare pencil test animation,
the recently-discovered first footage of Mickey in color (which was made
in 1932 to be shown at the Academy Awards), and storyboards for many of
the cartoons, which you can step through picture-by-picture.
It’s probably not a great idea to try to sit through the whole collection
at once. These cartoons aren’t big on variety: most of them are not
much more than excuses for Mickey and Minnie and the gang to sing, dance,
and generally have a good time. But they’re always fun, and it’s fascinating
to watch the development — as new characters get introduced (Goofy,
Pluto, and Donald) and as the Disney artists take a crude artform and
pump life into it little by little.
Many of these cartoons have been virtually unseen in decades; I’ve
always gotten the feeling that Disney is a little embarassed by
their relative lack of polish. But they’re musts for any Disney
fan, and a real “defining app” for laserdisc, just like PageMaker
was for the Macintosh (to steal a computer term). I actually don’t
own a disc player yet — I rented one in order to watch this set —
but volumes like this one, and the also-available complete Tex Avery
on laserdisc, make the idea of buying a disc player hard to resist.

Bluth will have nothing to do with these; they will be made by
Universal Cartoon Studios. When the _Land_ films are finished,
a series of “Fievel” cartoons, based on _An American Tail_’s
rodent hero, will be made. Fievel will also star in 65 episodes
of a syndicated show (which will include episodes that aired
on CBS last season).

’round here (Montreal), one of the two major stores I know of downtown stocks
some Streamline stuff. The other only has _Akira_.
Boite Noire on St-Denis, which is the place for major movie buffs to go, stocks
plenty of animation, Japanese or not.
It’s kinda funny; when I lived in Pierrefonds (the ‘burbs), most of the video
clubs in the area had extensive and sometimes eclectic animation sections. As
a result, I had memberships at over twelve clubs. I gorged myself. Now, it’s
as if they’ve all imploded.

Disney cops strike again? Who Censored the Roger Rabbit story?
But seriously, folks, inquiring minds want to know: are the
extra frames on the CAV or the CLV version? And is Whole Toon
Access open at this time of night?
Now the big question that comes to mind (particularly at the
studio) is “So, who laid the scene out? Who animated it and did the
in-betweens and clean-up and inking and paint and coloring and
photographed it and transferred it to disc?” Sounds like another

is when Jessica falls out of the car. If you use freeze-frame, you’re

Another scene is supposed to be when Baby Herman walks underneath the

supposed to be able to see him goose the woman’s bare bottom.

I talked to a friend who’s worked in animation for a couple of decades. He’s
a big laserdisc buff, and he basically pooh-poohed any suggestion that the
animators deliberately drew risque scenes into “Roger Rabbit.” He thinks the
“bawdy” frames are the result of bad inking and painting (remember that
there were several subcontracting studios on several continents, and lots
of matte and highlighting processes before you ever saw it on screen), and
that you can basically read sexual innuendo into anything.
Meanwhile, the disc of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” has been hopping off

Even though Disney sees a future in OVA’s, I truly think the non-Disney
industry is going to shift gears in the next several years and release its
titles exclusively to home video only. The real money for animated features
is in home video release, not in theatres. Disney is the only production
company with a good track record with its cartoons in theatres and will
continue to use that venue to promote its product.
“The Magic Voyage” is a good example of a title that was produced a
couple of years ago — to tie into Columbus’ 500th anniversary — received a

The Walt Disney Company has announced the details of its upcoming release
of _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ on home video. The film will be
released on October 28tyh; list price is $24.99 for the standard videotape
edition, or $79.99 for a deluxe set that also includes a “Making of”
video, a booklet, and some lithographs. Disney will also be releasing
a laserdisc version — which they usually don’t do right away, since
they make such good source material for pirates — at $26.99 for the
standard edition or $79.99 for the deluxe one.
As usual with Disney videos, it’s a complicated process if you want to
save money. There’s a $5 mail-in rebate you can get by buying four
Pillsbury products, including Pillsbury Cookies, All Ready Pizza Crust,
Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits, Soft Breadsticks, Pillsbury Plus Cake Mix,
Pillsbury Frosting, Family Brownie Mix, Deluxe Bar Mix, Deluxe Brownie Mix,
Bundt Cake Mix, Streusel Swirl Cake Mix, Quick Bread Mix and Sweet Rolls.
(I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.)
Then, if you want to really save the big bucks, you can take advantage of
a coupon book attached to each _Snow White_ package that offers the
following instant rebates on other Disney tapes:
$1.50 off “The Brave Little Toaster” or “The Return of Jafar”
$1.50 off “Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas”
$1 off any “Disney Sing Along Songs” or “Mickey’s Fun Songs”
$1 off any “Winnie the Pooh”
or a $5 Mail-In Refund on Any Disney Animated Classic.
Disney is planning a massive publicity campaign; get ready to be
confronted by Miss White and her tiny friends any time you turn on a TV,
visit a store, or open a newspaper or magazine this Fall. They’re
basically going to beat us into submission until we buy the thing; the
Disney press release refers to an “aggressive campaign” that
will “repeatedly hit” us consumers. (Sounds like Evander Holyfield is in

TITLE: _The Return of Jafar_
If you’re a fan of Disney’s 1992 animated feature _Aladdin_, how
you feel about _The Return of Jafar_ — its made-for-video sequel —
will depend on how much slack you’re willing to cut it, given
the circumstances of its production. Knowing that its budget
was a TV-animation one — probably a small fraction of that for
the original movie — do you judge it against Saturday morning
cartoons? Or does the movie fail if it isn’t everything the original
was and more?
Benchmarked against most of the animation on the tube, _The
Return of Jafar_ stacks up pretty well. The look is relatively
lavish, and some of the animation is very good — indeed, much
of the animation of the Genie compares well with that in the
first film. The story is a reasonably entertaining follow-up
that places Iago, the disreputable parrot, at the center of
things; while that’s its sole original idea, one doesn’t look
to sequels for original thoughts.
Nearly all the original voice performers are back; the notable
exception is Robin Williams. But Dan Castalanetta does a fine
job of replacing Williams — so fine, in fact, that if I were
Disney, I’d be worried about Williams suing.
Compared against the first film, though, _Jafar_ comes up
short. While it’s slick, it’s a lot more simplified — take
a look at how much detail has been lost in the design on
the magic carpet, for instance. And while the best animation
is very good, there’s a lot of mediocre work, especially
near the end. Aladdin and his girlfriend Jasmine sometimes
look like characters out of _Speed Racer_ — not a quality
one wants in one’s Disney heroes and heroines. The songs, too,
can’t compare with the Oscar-calibre ones in _Aladdin_.
But we better get used to the idea of made-for-video sequels
to Disney cartoons. (As well as TV series — the crew that
made this movie is also producing the _Aladdin_ series, which
I haven’t seen yet; both were made largely overseas, by
an entirely different group than Disney’s feature animation
department.)
In fact, if _The Return of Jafar_ is a hit, I’m willing to
bet money that we’ll see sequels to some true Disney classics —
_Snow White_, perhaps, or _101 Dalmatians_ — in a similar
vein.

Somebody at Tower is banking heavy on this Disney OAV sequel. There

it’s going to be hard waiting for the LD on this one.

TITLE: Animation LD releases
I’m pleased to see that street dates have been announced for the
following Disney animation films:
Aladdin CLV Pan & Scan ($29.99)
Aladdin THX CAV LTBX ($49.99)
Sep. 21, 1994
Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs CAV: Special Edition ($99.99)
Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs CLV ($29.99)
October 26, 1994
Nightmare Before Christmas CAV: Special Edition ($99.99)
Nightmare Before Christmas CLV ($29.99)
November 16, 1994
They don’t list it as letterboxed which is a major disappointment,
although I don’t think the ratio was too extreme.
Not exactly animation but of note:
Dark Crystal LTBX ($29.99) July 27, 1994
Also, Criterion is coming out with something called
World’s Greatest Animation (CAV) $99.95
I don’t know what is included in this release yet.
I’ll put this here as it transcends the topic of Japanese animation:
My Neighbor Totoro ($29.98)
An excellent family film from Hayao Miyazaki finally available on
laserdisc in an English dubbed version that is faithful to the original.

TITLE: Silent Toons from LC
The Library of Congress (along with the Smithsonian) has released a
swell collection of silent toons dating from the turn of the century
(J. Stuart Blackton and trick films) to about 1922. Bobby Bumps, Krazy
Kat, the Katzenjammers, Keeping UP with the Joneses, and various others
–including fragments of two rare McCay toons (okay, so they spelt his
name wrong on the box) make for an entertaining educational experience.
One of my favorites is the Bud Fisher-esque “AWOL,” a sort of prehistoric
Private Snafu. The Mutt-like soldier who starts the cartoon off by
griping about how long it’s taking to get off the base now that the World
War is over soon succumbs to the blandishments of an irresponsible hussy
named “Joy.” She takes him on a Joy Ride. The small audience here at Chez

rather tiny “eek” of consternation.
Anyway, do yourselves a favor and support dead animators! Available at high-
class museums in DC, including (besides the two co-producing institutions)
the National Gallery of Art. It’s part of a series of silent reissues that
includes THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ, a D.W. Griffith gangster flick, and the
silent work of Black film pioneer Oscar Micheaux. No other animated titles yet.

TITLE: Don’t Be Fooled…
by the latest animation videos that do their darndest to look just like
Disney products, with similar packaging, design, and subjects that might
be confused with Disney ones.
There are two new ones: Goodtimes Home Video (the expert in this field)
has Leo the Lion: King of the Jungle. I don’t know much about this
film, except that Goodtimes is obviously trying to hitch its wagon
to Disney’s _The Lion King_. (The Goodtimes tape doesn’t seem to have
anything to do with _Leo the Lion_, a dubbed version of the sequel
series to Osamu Tezuka’s _Kimba the White Lion_ that ran on U.S.
tv about ten years ago.)
Then there’s Sony/Wonder’s _Snow White_, a very Disneyesque looking
product that just happens to be in stores a bit before Disney ships
its _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ next month. Again, I don’t
know anything about this film. (It’s worth noting that the producers
of both these movies may well have had no intention of ripping off
Disney; it’s the packaging that is designed to fool the public.)
Goodtimes is a small company that’s been doing this for years
(and has been sued at least twice by Disney, once successfully
and once not). You’d think, however, that a major vendor like
Sony would be above this sort of thing.

I’m pretty sure that they *have* closed – I tried to go by there on a

Walt Disney’s _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ will officially be released
on home video next Friday, a week from today. While video merchants are
usually forbidden to begin selling popular tapes to the public before

Disney’s _Return of Jafar_ is by far the biggest direct-to-video

TITLE: Who Won: Snow or the Dinos?
Video industry research firm VideoScan has released a list of the
top ten best-selling home videos during 1994. The winners are:
1. Jurassic Park
2. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
3. Mrs. Doubtfire
4. Fox And The Hound
5. Speed
6. Return of Jafar
7. Beethoven’s 2nd
8. Thumbelina
9. The Secret Garden
10. The Fugitive
These figures are controversial; VideoScan says that _Jurassic Park_ was
the champ, and _Snow White_ came in second.Disney, however, contends that
_Snow_ really sold more copies, and VideoScan’s numbers aren’t
representative of the real home video market. The company has a point;
VideoScan’s survey didn’t take into account mass marketers such as
Wal-Mart, which undoubtedly sold millions of copies of _Snow White_.
In any event, Disney doesn’t really have cause for complaint. With _Snow
White_, _Fox and the Hound_, and _Return of Jafar_, the company’s animated
far made up half of the six top-selling tapes in 1994. The only other
animated film to make the list was Don Bluth’s _Thumbelina_, at #8.

And you have to wade through no less than FIVE promos for other Disney
products and films to get to the film — one of which is for the forthcoming
first-time-ever-on-video release of the 1970 film “The Aristocats.”
I don’t think I’ll get “Lion King”, either, since I don’t claim to be a
Disney completist.

It’s an interesting show. I’ve only seen the first episode and I enjoyed
the insights into Japanese culture. It’s one of those shows that has
strong cultural aspects to it. The concept is a good one, call up for
fast food, get the Goddess hotline, make a wish for a Goddess and voila!
It should happen to everyone 🙂
The animation is competent, it may not be my thing particularly. I just
got through watching Kishin Corps (Kishin Heidan) and I love that style.
This is rather soft, seemed to rely a lot on panning action, it is fairly
slowed paced but perhaps that’s because it is aimed at a different audience.

Would that be _Dominion Tank Police_? If so, then contrary to any image

My first reaction was “Them’s no scantily-clad females, them’s the Puma
sisters!” It’s Anna and Uni right? The concept of “sea urchin” Puma seemed
delightful to me. As for raunch, well there is the “strip dance” in Act I.
And how about the phallic shaped tank stoppers in that great chase sequence?
However, this isn’t “hentai” (lecher) oriented stuff by any stretch of the

I like _Dominion_. It’s Shirow Masamune’s (_Appleseed_, _Black Magic M-66_)
lighter work. Of course, it has his usual background social theme — in these
case, ecological — but the emphasis is really on comedy. The anime is a
pretty good adaptation of the manga, which is more than I can say for

We’ve been bashing _The Lion King_ here for the five promos that precede
the film itself on the home video version. But I’m beginning to think
that it’s unfair to single Disney out here. This weekend, I rented
_Undercover Blues_ and _The Hudsucker Proxy_ (excellent, by the way) —
and the former had four promos, and the latter five.
At least you can get away from commercials by seeing films
in their original theatrical release — usually. My favorite

booed loudly and angrily. They haven’t shown any commercials since.

TITLE: _Pocahontas_ is out on video…
…sort of. Don’t expect Disney’s version to come out for another
year or so, but _Young Pocahontas_, a release from a video company
I’ve never heard of before, is already on the shelves.
Curiously enough, there’s a chance that this film might be a
bit more historically accurate than the Disney one. It appears
to depict Pocahontas as a small girl; as has been widely noted,
the real-life Pocahontas was twelve years old at the time her
adventures with Captain John Smith happened.
(Disney’s character is a lot older, in order to inject a healthy
dose of romance into the plot.)

TITLE: Tron
The Disney Exclusive Archive laserdisc edition of the film TRON hit the
streets on Wednesday (at least I got it on that date through US Laser Video).
This 3 CAV disc box set is a definitive release of this fascinating and
unparalleled animation production. Those who want to know how the electronic
world effects were achieved will have all their questions answered in this
release.
First of all, the film is spread over four sides in standard play. It is
thankfully free of any jitter frames. The breaks are all intelligently
placed. The audio mix has some problems on side one where the dialogue
seems to be too far under the music/efx tracks. This is really surprising
for a THX processed soundtrack. It isn’t intolerable though and it seems
to get better on the rest of the film. Analog track one has a commentary
from Lissberger, Kushner, Ellenshaw and Taylor. It is a running commentary
while watching the film, but it doesn’t just stick to scene analysis. It
gives a broad history of the effort and many technique details. These,
however, become much clearer when watching the supplemental material on
the third disc. Analog track two has isolated Wendy Carlos’ music score.
The supplemental disc is superb. It has a wealth of production drawings
grouped into subjects. There are unused concepts by Andy Probert and the
many musings of Moebius and Syd Mead. There is a section that goes through
layer by layer the many types of animation enhancements and how they were
accomplished. When I think that they shot 70,000 feet of live-action film
and transferred it to individual frames for the cel animation effects, my
brain hurts. As Lissberger says in the commentary, if he had understood
the magnitude of the job before they started he never would have done it.
The highlight of the set for me are two deleted scenes that are presented.
The first containing the most animation elements shot for any of the
film’s sequences and taken all the way to music and dialogue mix. The
second much shorter follow up scene doesn’t have the dialogue or music track.
Both scenes take place in Yori’s apartment (I didn’t even know she had one),
between Cindy Morgan (Yori/Laura) and Bruce Boxleitner (Tron/Allan). It is
one of the more awkward love scenes I’ve ever screened, but, oh the environ-
ment in which it takes place! Like the rest of the film, it showed the
lack of skill of the creators on a human emotional level, but clearly
demonstrates their technical brilliance and creative energy.
With this release, Disney Studios does great justice to this film and
brings to the public the kind of insights that may allow a fresh approach
to give TRON the acclaim it really deserves.

I don’t know of any specific scene trims, but it could have been done.
However, Disney kept a pretty tight control over the theater prints and
I suspect it was never cut by them, I don’t actually now if there was a
theatrical re-release after the original dates since it was so poorly
received.
The laserdisc edition is the original cut, there is no “Director’s Cut,”
it was so expensive to create any scene that if it wasn’t going to be
in the final movie, all the necessary effects were not added. The only
exception was the deleted scene mentioned in my original message in
Yori’s apartment. This has not been integrated into the original movie
and is presented separately.

MAGI worked on some of the computer generated effects while a company called
Triple I did others. The laserdisc set goes into this in considerable
detail even showing early demo footage from both companies. Robert Abel
was another pioneer who did some of the effects. One of Lissberger’s
accomplishments was to integrate the best applications of these early
computer rendering breakthroughs into a cohesive “electronic” world. It
was interesting to hear him mention that they rejected calling it “cyber-
space” because they thought it would sound too alien to the mainstream
audience they were aiming at 🙂

MAGI did the lightcycles, and they did the scene where the big stomping
floating trash compactor got blasted into bits (I forget what those things
were called … it’s the thing that could rotate its legs and squeeze).
A lot of other stuff was done by triple-I and there may have been some
other graphics companies involved too.
MAGI’s claim to fame involved simulating the propagation of neutrons
through dense materials in nuclear power plant design. It turned out
some of the software they did to figure that out was useful for rendering
ordinary light, given the somewhat dark terrain of the game grid.
The rendering scene I used to point out to people involved the flare when
the fighter tank goes over the edge of the cliff and flips on its back
just before hitting the bottom 🙂

TITLE: _The Aristocats_…
…Walt Disney Studios’ 1970 animated feature, is now available on video.
Oddly enough, it’s been available in other parts of the world for quite
awhile — I saw it for sale in London when I was there a year ago.
_The Aristocats_ was the first animated feature made by the studio after
Walt’s death, and it’s some Disney fans’ choice as the worst animated
film the studio ever produced. And there *are* some embarassing things
about it — it has a cheesy, low-budget look (some of the animation
is traced from _101 Dalmatians_), as well as a weirdly cavalier attitude
towards history. (It’s set in Paris of the 1920s, but one of the characters
is a hippie cat and there are a couple of _Hee-Haw_-style countrified dogs.)
Still, the last time I saw the film, about 10 years ago, I enjoyed it.
The animation, by Disney’s Nine Old Men, is extremely facile, and there
are plenty of enjoyable gags. Note that this film, a love story about cats in
Paris, was made just a few years after Chuck Jones’s very similar _Gay
Purr-ee_. Jones has been known to wonder out loud whether that was
a coincidence.

from one sequence (Thomas O’Malley’s introduction) nothing could really hold my
interest.

I remember seeing _The Aristocats_ in 1970, when I was five or six, quite
clearly. It was the third movie my parents took my younger sister to
see, after a double-feature of _Fantasia_ and Chaplin’s _The Circus_
(you can tell that they were trying to instill good taste in her at an
early age).
The first movie *I* saw in a theater was Disney’s _Jungle Book_, which
came out when I was three. And it may explain the fact that I’ve been
interested in animation ever since. Who knows; if my folks had taken me to
see a Woody Allen movie, or a James Bond one, my whole life might have
turned out differently.

I would recommend buying it just for completeness. As you said in an
earlier message, the animation leaves much desired. They could have done a
lot better at Disney. I bought it mainly for the ‘swinging’ scene where the
O’Malley introduces his band. I can’t keep my fingers from snapping and my
feet from tapping looking at this scene. For the rest it is enjoyable
enough.

My earliest memory of cinema animation is a showing of Peter Pan at my first
elementary school, but apparently my folks had taken me to see Fantasia earlier
and I loved it. That and the early exposure to Warner Bros. and Brave Raideen
might explain something as well.

TITLE: _The Aristocats_
You’ve got to have a lot of patience to watch Disney’s new home video of
_The Aristocats_. First, when you open the package, you’ll be showered
with glossy brochures advertising a variety of other Disney products,
as well as various kid-oriented food and other products. Then, when
you pop the tape in your VCR and press Play, you’ll need to sit through
a lengthy series of Disney ads, including promos for Disney World,
some Disney video games, several recent and upcoming video releases
(including a truly terrible looking _Aladdin_ sequel), _The Hunchback
of Notre Dame_ (which opens next month in theaters), and who knows
what else (I lost count).
If you can stand all that, you’ll see a pleasant, unpretentious cartoon
from 1970, which seems like eons ago, given the lavish, blockbuster
events that recent Disney cartoons have become. _The Aristocats_ has
cheesy production values, an over-reliance on Disney’s stock voice
artists of the 1960s and 1970s (Phil Harris, Eva Gabor, Sterling Holloway,
et al), and a storyline that’s distinctly reminiscent of the much better
_101 Dalmatians_. Despite being set in Paris in 1910, it’s full of every
accent: Hungarian, British, and several American dialects, as well as
circa 1970s touches such as psychadelic special effects and the use of
words such as “Groovy!” in the dialogue.
Still, it’s enjoyable, and I don’t think I feel that way purely for
nostalgic reasons. The animation and backgrounds are expertly-done; these
cats really move and behave like felines should. And while the film isn’t
ambitious in the least, it’s clear that it’s done by artists who are
confident about their own skills (which they should have been, since most
of them had been at work at Disney since the great days of the 1930s).
_The Aristocats_ may be a minor effort, but at least it doesn’t
overpromise great things, as most of Disney’s recent films have, and as
_Hunchback_ almost certainly will.

This *exactly* what I hate most of the Disney video’s. I could not care
less for their ad stuff. Especially the indecent lenght of promo material
they put before the real movie almost makes me wish for a perfect VCR
copying machine and copy only the movie on a fresh tape and throw the
original away.

TITLE: The Last Disney Animated Feature…
…to reach home video may well be _Oliver and Company_, which is due out
this September. Why would it be the last one? Because it’s just about
the only animated feature left in the Disney vaults that has never
been released on tape. The only exception I can think of is _Victory
Through Air Power_, a WWII propaganda feature that may *never* be
available for home viewing.

I’ve heard of that, but never seen it … I’ve always enjoyed watching
cartoons (and other films) made during WW II … subtle and not-so-subtle
references and all that. I suppose some of them are fairly “politically
incorrect” nowadays!

TITLE: _Aladdin and the King of Thieves_…
is the title of a made-for-videotape sequel to Disney’s _Aladdin_.
It’s hitting video stores early this week, and the big news is that
Robin Williams returns as the voice of the Genie. (In the first
video sequel to _Aladdin_, as well as the subsequent TV series,
another actor played the part.)
The first sequel was terrible, but the new one gets a rave review
in today’s _New York Times_.

Either this means that direct to home video release in the US is now
lucrative enough to attract big talent or that Robin Williams is having
so much fun with the character he’s willing to do it for less than
what his agent would probably want 🙂

Well, Williams was annoyed with Disney after the release of _Aladdin_.
It apparently had to do with the fact that he was paid only a small
fee despite the movie’s huge success, or perhaps that they touted
his name in the movie’s merchandising after promising not to do so.
He eventually made up with Disney after the company gave him an
expensive painting.
It’s probably a safe bet that he’s getting a lot of money for this
new movie. The first _Aladdin_ sequel was the most successful
direct-to-video movie ever made, and this new one is being
heavily marketed with ads that spotlight the Genie — they’re
on all the buses here in Boston.

TITLE: Recent Warners on tape
Two of Warner Bros.’ most recent cartoon shorts starring its classic
characters are now available on video tape. _Chariots of Fur_ is a
new Road Runner directed by Chuck Jones and designed by Maurice Noble;
_Carrotblanca_ is a Bugs Bunny parody of guess-what-classic-film.
Each cartoon comes on a tape with several vintage shorts.

They should be available just about anywhere that sells kid-oriented
videos — I saw them at Tower Records. You can also order them online
right from BIX. At the : prompt, type
telnet videoexpress.com
…then follow the menus to search for either CARROTBLANCA or CHARIOTS OF FUR.

TITLE: A Profusion of Boop
Republic Home Video has released _Betty Boop: The Definitive Collection_,
a $70 set that includes 8 video tapes, with a total of nine hours of
Betty Boop cartoons — that’s 115 films in all. Oddly enough, this
collection is available only on tape; usually, elaborate packages such
as this one, obviously aimed at grown-up cartoon nuts, are available
on laser disc but *not* on tape.
I’m still working my way through the tapes, but I’m mostly impressed —
the quality is excellent, and I’m seeing both Boop classics (such
as _The Old Man of the Mountain_ and _Minnie the Moocher_) and
cartoons that are completely new to me. The set may be “definitive,”
but it’s not absolutely complete — there are a handful of Betty
Boop cartoons that are missing (and most of them are truly missing —
that is, no prints are known to exist). Due to a gaffe on Republic’s
part, one cartoon is a black-and-white print of an — ick — recolored
copy.
I also wish that the collection came with a thicker, more informative
booklet than the one you get, or at least that the year that each
cartoon was made was identified. (Rather than putting the cartoons
in chronological order, the tapes organize them into themes, such
as “surrealism.”) But the price is reasonable, the best of the
cartoons remain amazing, and the set is a must-buy for aficionados
of 1930s animation.

Walt Disney Pictures’ _The Hunchback of Notere Dame_ is now available

TITLE: Get them while you can
According to current radio commercials, Disney will soon be pulling
the video editions of several of its animated films off the market:
Pocahontas, The Aristocats, and Oliver and Company among them.
The company tries to pawn its videos off as collectors’ items by
discontinuing them every so often — this does keep supplies limited,
I guess, but before they’re cut off, millions of copies are distributed.
It’s likely that all of these movies will be back eventually in new
editions.
