BIX Animation Conference: CBIX 04/09/1995

[DaveM.]* No wonder I’m leaving this place The software still says (C) 1986!
[Emru]* Hi, Dave!
[DaveM.]* Hello, Emru!
[Emru]* Hey, are you sure we can’t make you reconsider?
[DaveM.]* No, I’ve packed my bags. This place done me good for five 1/2 years.
[hmccracken] Howdy, all!
[DaveM.]* Hello, Harry!
[Emru]* Then we have no choice. Expect the hired goons to pay you a visit.
[Emru]* Hi, Harry!
[DaveM.]* They don’t know where I live.
[Emru]* Of course they do. They’re hired goons.
[DaveM.]* THey can find out if they /sho res. My current address is in there.
[hmccracken] (And this being the Animation Conference, these are the goons
from _Thimble Theater_.)
[DaveM.]* …In fact, everyone knows where I live except the Ex-Girlfriend From
[DaveM.]* Hell… and I did a good job of comvering my tracks.
[DaveM.]* How has everyone’s weekend been?
[Emru]* Speaking of Thimble Theater, one of the local second-hand bookstores
had a compilation of old Popeye strips for sale… when I finally decided to
buy it, it was gone.
[hmccracken] Hmmm. Which one — the old one from around 1970?
[Emru]* Not bad, Dave. Got my Apatoons on Friday and haven’t had the time to
read it.
[Emru]* Not sure, Harry. It had a yellow slipcover.
[DaveM.]* I hope everyone is looking forward to the Alumni Issue.
[hmccracken] It’s an unusually good _Apatoons_ — but issue #80 should be a
doozy!
[DaveM.]* I didn’t evpect the turnout for 79 that I got!
[Emru]* Yeah — fifty copies? Whoo!
[hmccracken] Yes, I think that’s it. It’s a good collection, but doesn’t have
anything that the Fantagraphics volumes don’t.
[hmccracken] Welcome, Robair!
[Emru]* Hey, Robair!
[DaveM.]* Hello, Robair!
[Robair]* Hello, everyone!
[DaveM.]* Long time, no talk to.
[Robair]* Hee heee!
[hmccracken] Well, do all we U.S. citizens have our taxes done?
[Robair]* If I owe money, you can bet I didn’t.
[DaveM.]* Done months ago and the taxes were paid for with Nancy’s refund.
Don’t ask how, but it’s mathematics.
[DaveM.]* Robair won $107 dollars from his local radio station. Guess the
frequency, Kenneth.
[Robair]* And I got the check on Friday, and it’ll be put right into the bank.
[Emru]* Got mine taken care of months ago. I get something like $200 back.
But that’s only Canadian dollars.
[hmccracken] I’m waiting for the President to sign this bill that will let me
write off my health insurance for last year! It’s on his desk but he hasn’t
signed it yet.
[DaveM.]* That is about $2800 for you and me.
[hmccracken] I’ve never been so interested in a bill before!
[hmccracken] When’s the deadline in Canada?
[Emru]* No, Dave, it’s the other way around — $200 Canadian is about $140 US.
[Emru]* End of the month, I think.
[DaveM.]* You guys will be happy to hear I had a blood test yesterday, and the
sugars were normal.
[hmccracken] That’s great, Dave!
[Robair]* Very good!
[Emru]* Checking for diabetes? My blood test came back normal, too.
[DaveM.]* So I think we’re out of the crisis zone for the time being.
[hmccracken] Speaking of health, I recently filed a claim on my insurance, and
got a letter back saying that my plan had lapsed!
[hmccracken] Apparently my employer forgot to sign me up for health insurance.
[DaveM.]* Yes, Emru. It came up high on an insurance physical.
[hmccracken] Thank heavens that the claim was for my eye test, not a heart
transplant or something.
[Emru]* Ah. It just runs in my family.
[DaveM.]* Since then I’ve been doing intensive exercising and dieting. I lost
20 lbs., and I feel great. I bought a Large shirt for the first time in years
today!
[Emru]* I just cut down on sugar intake and drank more milk. Exercise? Who
has time? šŸ™‚
[DaveM.]* I couldn’t do that. My wife thinks I’m lactose intolerant.
[Robair]* I can swear I’m losing weight, and I’m not trying that hard–just
altering little lthings in my diet, eschewing sweets…
[DaveM.]* We don’t even have milk in the house!
[hmccracken] In other news, I just got back from San Francisco and will be
leaving again on Wednesday…]
[Robair]* How can you be lactose intolerant and I drink milk by the gallon?
[Emru]* Harry < Speaking of bills becoming laws, weren't the new Schoolhouse Rock shorts supposed to start airing this year? [DaveM.]* How are things in Frisco? And do they look at you funny if you step off the airplane and say "Hello, Frisco!"? [hmccracken] They kill you if you get off the plane and say that... [DaveM.]* She says it's from eating cheese. [hmccracken] Things appeared to be fine, but I didn't do much on this last trip, since it was only two and a half days and I was booked for most of it. [Emru]* I eat cheese by the pound. [Emru]* So Harry, what's the deal with San Francisco? [DaveM.]* Gee, Robair and Emru, America's Dairy Farmers (tm) would certainly love you for that! [kipw] Moo! [Emru]* Hi, Kip! [kipw] Hi gang! [Robair]* Hello, Kip! [hmccracken] I'm going down there for three months on a temporary assignment for PC World. [DaveM.]* Moo yourself, Kip! Howare things in Newort News? [hmccracken] (They asked me to relocate permanently, but I didn't want to.) [Robair]* Cheese is GROOVY, man! Especially when washed down with eggnog! [kipw] Rather jolly. I was just watching the television set. [Emru]* That's some assignment! How come my editor doesn't give me assignments like that? [hmccracken] This 3-month deal sounds good, since they're springing for an apartment... [Emru]* No can do for me, Kip -- I'm allergic to eggs. [kipw] 3 months where? [hmccracken] Welcome, Kip! [hmccracken] San Francisco... [DaveM.]* But he does eat cheese by the pound. [kipw] You have me confused with Robair. (Happens all the time.) [hmccracken] I'm leaving on Wednesday. [kipw] Good deal! [hmccracken] Kip<--- Are you aware of a British cartoonist named Kipper Williams? [kipw] Didn't Frank reprint a cartoon by him last time? [Robair]* Did he do a strip called the Kipper Kids? [DaveM.]* We've discussed him in APATOONS. I think he works for Beano, or Viz, or one of thise jolly rags. [hmccracken] Maybe so...I saw his work when I was in London last month. [kipw] The Kipper Kids aren't a stip. They're wierd-ohs. I like em. [hmccracken] I saw his work in one of the daily papers. [kipw] I don't think Kipper Williams draws for VIZ, but I'd like to see A Kip Williams work for them... [DaveM.]* But who did the Weird-Ohs? Wasn't that Bill Campbell? [kipw] Which Wierd-Ohs? Like the model kits? [DaveM.]* Yes, definitely. [hmccracken] The Big Daddy Roth type things? [kipw] I always liked "Davy," "Digger," and (most of all) "Daddy." [kipw] My heart belonged to it, you see. [kipw] It was the archetypal suburban commuter, with a hat and a suit, but a face like the Rat Fink. [hmccracken] A bit of PC World/comics related news: [DaveM.]* They're back in production with those kits. I saw a few in the hobby shop the other day. [kipw] Hmmm... [hmccracken] We used to have a strip by Mark Marek (I think?) -- _Two-Fisted Management_ [DaveM.]* We used to cheap knock offs OF Peanuts. [Robair]* Yes, P-NUTS. [DaveM.]* Marek's one of those National Lampoon guys. I think his art style was somewhere between a five year old who could draw and a six year old who couldn't. [hmccracken] Does anyone here remember _Shrimpy_, the Peanuts knockoff from old issues of Archie comics? [Emru]* No! [DaveM.]* Robair probably does. [kipw] I've seen Shrimpy. Also some pathetic knockoffs from an old Timely mag. [hmccracken] Right -- it was either by him or by one of his legions of imitators. Real new-wave stuff. [Robair]* Yes, Shrimpy, the boy who got progressively smaller as the strip went on. [Robair]* I think it was backup for Pat the Brat. [kipw] Marek, though, had actual content. I came to like his stuff, despite the style. [Robair]* Which was a Dennis the Menace knockoff. [DaveM.]* No, Robair. You're thinking of The Incredible Shrinking Joe Franklin. [hmccracken] LOL, Dave! [kipw] Rather, in his hands, the style seemed to make sense. I liked "Dirty Father Harry" and "Hercules: His Adventures among the North Americans" [DaveM.]* "I'm sorry, Joe. Due to your decreasing size, we're going to have to let you go." "But I've got George Jessel lined up for next week!" [hmccracken] Well, I don't know if we should wait for others to show up... [kipw] Sigh. That was almost the lat time the Friedmans were funny. [hmccracken] ...I assume we all remember the rules for BIX trivia? [kipw] ...last, rather... [DaveM.]* Only the Friedmans could work Paul J. Smith into a strip. [kipw] Shortest first name wins by default? [hmccracken] That would be Ro. [kipw] That Drew sure can draw, though. Pencils, anyway. [DaveM.]* I thnk he said "Oh yeah! Well f--- Disney and his g--d--- mouse." [hmccracken] Or Bair. [Robair]* Hooray! [kipw] They call me "k" [Emru]* They call me "" [DaveM.]* Like my wife says, "Don't call me late for dinner." [kipw] I think they just don't call you, Emru. Sorry. [hmccracken] When I was in San Francisco on Wednesday, I saw a virtual reality type ride from Iwerks Entertainment... [Emru]* *Wah* [hmccracken] ...It was great to see a giant sign with the word IWERKS on it. [DaveM.]* The second greatest name in animation gets its long overdue due. [kipw] I think I'm in one of those. I get up and go to my virtual job and get a virtual salary every couple of weeks. [hmccracken] Let's start the game in five minutes or so. [DaveM.]* I saw some of "The Great Race" last night. I hadn't seen that film in years. [hmccracken] The Blake Edwards flick? [kipw] Yeah, on AMC. [Emru]* Film? You mean movie? When was the last time I saw one of those? (Aiiieeee.) [kipw] As Gecko noted, "Didn't they base Wacky Races on this?" [DaveM.]* I believe he directed it. And as I'm sure you all know, that film won an Oscar for sound effects editing. [kipw] And Geck was right. They even stole gags. [DaveM.]* The man who won that Oscar was none other than Treg Brown. [hmccracken] My favorite Edwards film (in fact, the only one I like) is _The Party_. [hmccracken] How is Gecko, anyway? [kipw] I'm fond of the original PINK PANTHER. [DaveM.]* How is the big Geckman? [hmccracken] I guess I do like some of the PP films. [Emru]* I haven't seen Pink Panther in years. [kipw] He's at work just now; otherwise okay. He was in a Walk-a-thon today, [kipw] just like Beavis and Butt-Head. [hmccracken] Speaking of the Panther, there's a new theatrical Pink Panther short coming out this Friday, along with The Pebble and the Penguin. [kipw] They laid out the course one-way, so he ended up walking twice as far. [DaveM.]* We've got one coming up in a few weeks. I've got sponsorship materials on my desk at work, but none so far. I'm thinking of also riding in the upcoming Tour de Cure. [kipw] I'm glad they still show cartoons with cartoons. [kipw] Did anybody see "Animation Sucks" on B&B-Head? [hmccracken] This new short is called _Driving Mr. Pink_, and co-stars someone called (I think) Voodoo Man. [DaveM.]* It's the March of Dimes Walk America, on April 30. [Emru]* I can't wait for the Jones short before Batman; I was getting annoyed at all the new cartoon shorts showing before movies I wasn't going to see. [hmccracken] I don't know if the Panther speaks in it or not. [kipw] "...Rosebud..." [Emru]* Voodoo Man? I think that's one of the new characters from the first new episode of PP. [Robair]* If he's going to return to the big screen, he's got to be mute. That's the whole point. [kipw] Well, as a practicing Santerian, I'm offended! [DaveM.]* This was the one that was supposed to be out before "It Runs I The Family", which I don't think was ever released. It was originally called "Streetlight Serenade" sor something like that. [hmccracken] Well, should we start the trivia? [Robair]* May as well! [Emru]* a) yes! [DaveM.]* And he is called the Voodoo Man, and he's from the current Pink Panther show. [kipw] So, anyway, Beavis & Butt-Head's teacher gives a long speech about the joys of animation... [Emru]* Do I get a point? [hmccracken] Do we all remember the rules? You send your answer to me as a /msg. [kipw] Sorry, we don't use msg. [kipw]
[DaveM.]* That was a test.
[DaveM.]* It didn’t work.
[Emru]* It got to me.
[HarryM]* (Note that I just changed my name to HarryM.)
[DaveM.]* Wait ! I gotta change my function keys.
[Robair]* So it’s /msg HarryM.
[kipw] Function keys… you rich kids…
[HarryM]* OK, are we ready!
[DaveM.]* I set up one for each possible response. Any nerd with Windows
Terminal can do it. šŸ˜‰
[HarryM]* er, ready?
[kipw] Yep.
[HarryM]* Here we go…
[HarryM]* QUESTION ONE

[kipw] F) Shy, retiring introvert.
[DaveM.]* BTW, Harry, Nancy says hello!
[HarryM]* Time’s up!
[Emru]* H) Second-in-command to Baby Doc.
[Robair]* Already?
[HarryM]* Everyone got this right — B). And hello Nancy!
[Robair]* Wasn’t the Country Bear Jamboree there by 1963?
[DaveM.]* I think it was installed int he park the first day.
[kipw] Heck no, it has “1970” written all over it, doesn’t it?
[HarryM]* I don’t think the jamboree opened until 1975 or thereabouts.
[DaveM.]* So does “The Boatniks.”
[HarryM]* And it opened in WDW first.’
[Robair]* 1975? No, I think it’d been there in at least the 1960’s. My Disney
lore is rusty.
[HarryM]* Next question coming up…
[HarryM]* QUESTION TWO
[HarryM]* MUSIC IN ANIMATION
[HarryM]* Who are the Randy Van Horn Singers?
[HarryM]* A) An award-winning jazz group formed by Randy Van Horn, a Hollywood

[HarryM]* E) All of the above
[Emru]* F) Diana Ross’ Supreme replacements.
[HarryM]* Time’s up!
[kipw] G) Some horny guys who played in a van
[DaveM.]* F) The Artist Formerly Known AS Prince
[HarryM]* Emru got this right: these singers specialized in Hanna-Barbera
themes.
[kipw] All right for you, Emru!
[HarryM]* They also did some work with Esquivel.
[Emru]* Woo! The Scientific Wild Guess worked again.
[Robair]* But they never got screen credit. And I can SWEAR I hear Jean Vander
Pyl in
[HarryM]* Also: the Jamboree definitely opened in the mid 1970s, but I don’t
know what year.
[Robair]* the later version of the Flintstones Theme.
[kipw] I) Three people.
[DaveM.]* I haven’t the faintest idea who Randy Van Horn was. I only remember
Paul DeKorte being the vocal contractor.
[HarryM]* Time for another question…
[HarryM]* QUESTION THREE
[HarryM]* COMICS AND THE US POSTAL SERVICE
[HarryM]* Which of the following characters is not among those honored by an
upcoming series of postage stamps?
[HarryM]* A) Brenda Starr
[HarryM]* B) Dick Tracy
[HarryM]* C) Professor Luicius Butts
[HarryM]* D) The Yellow Kid
[HarryM]* E) Pogo
[Robair]* f: Spiro Agnew
[HarryM]* Time’s up!
[Emru]* G) Papa Smurf
[kipw] F) None of the above: it’s no longer an honor.
[HarryM]* Emru and Dave got it right — Pogo is the odd possum out.
[Emru]* Not since Elvis, anyway.
[Robair]* Good kip!
[DaveM.]* That’ll be 32 Smurfs, please.
[HarryM]* What I want to know is, why won’t there be a _Playful Little Audrey_
stamp?
[DaveM.]* Coming Soon: Papa Smurf, Disgruntled Postal Worker!
[Robair]* Only because you’d probably have the kids stick it on the wall.
[HarryM]* We should get to vote for our choice of young Pogo or fat Pogo.
[kipw] Classic Pogo or Pogo Lite.
[Robair]* Besides, they all look like little TV screens.
[Emru]* New Pogo!
[HarryM]* OK, time for another question
[DaveM.]* Pogo by Walt, or Pogo by Selby>
[HarryM]* QUESTION FOUR
[HarryM]* COMICS MERCHANDISNG
[HarryM]* What is Wimpy’s?
[HarryM]* A) A British chain of fast-food restaurants

[Emru]* F) I’ll gladly answer you on Wednesday for a question today.
[HarryM]* Time up, and congrats to all!
[Robair]* G) I don;t know, but you’d probably find it close to the floor.
[kipw] G) A store that sells cheap trash bags
[Emru]* I never ate at a Wimpy’s in England, but my father and I made regular
stops in Nairobi.
[HarryM]* When I was in London, I saw a few Wimpy’s, but they seem to have
faded as McDonalds et al have entered the market.
[Robair]* And olny due to gravity.
[HarryM]* They still have a fascinating offering: round hot dogs.
[kipw] I’ve eaten at one in Virginia Bech, which is now gone.
[kipw] But I have a T-shirt.
[DaveM.]* When did Virginia Beach go?
[kipw] I can get “Twirly Dogs” at Smitty’s here.
[kipw] One day they decided to stop putting in sand and see what happened.
[kipw] (Or watch “The Death of Ocean View Park”)
[HarryM]* There’s also a Wimpy’s in Las Vegas, but I think it’s unrelated to
the British cian.
[DaveM.]* It moved to Myrtle Beach, along with a box of Showmen records.
[HarryM]* Ok, another question…
[HarryM]* QUESTION FIVE

replaced him with a clone.
[DaveM.]* …speaking of which, I finally sold that decrepit old car of mine.
Harry will likely know what I;m talking about.
[kipw] this HarryM seems to have all the answers…
[HarryM]* Time’s up!
[HarryM]* Dave <--I thought you got rid of it months ago... [HarryM]* Everyone except Emru knew that the MS was really Mighty Mouse. [DaveM.]* No, I only sold it this week. It's been sitting in my garage since mid-November, when I got the Windstar. [Emru]* Curses. Foiled again. [kipw] Duh, which one's that? [kipw] Which question was that? [HarryM]* Question five [kipw] 2X2L calling CQ... [kipw] Ah! Thanks. [HarryM]* And now it's time for question six... [HarryM]* QUESTION SIX [DaveM.]* Hey, if you have E, turn it on now. They're doing a behind the scenes thing on ER. [HarryM]* VOICE ARTISTS [HarryM]* Why didn't Mel Blanc want to take over the voice of Elmer Fudd after the death of Arthur Q. [HarryM]* Time's up, and everyone knew it was A)! [DaveM.]* F) he knew that Hal Smith was warming up in the bullpen with his own pwivate game of Kill The Wion [Robair]* G) Mel had handpicked Hal Smith for the earth-shattering duty. [kipw] G) Putting in a different voice would have been a tacit admission he hadn't g been doing it all along. [DaveM.]* I've finally confirmed that the Fudd voice in "pre-shysterical Hare" was Daws Butler. [HarryM]* OK, question seven is coming... [HarryM]* QUESTION SEVEN [HarryM]* COMIC STRIPS [HarryM]* What was the original name of Bil Keane's _Family Circus_ panel, and why did it change? [HarryM]* A) _It's All in the Family_; it was changed after the succcess of the almost identically-named TV show [HarryM]* B) _The Family Circle_; it was changed after complaints by the similarly-titled magazine [HarryM]* C) _Dolly's World_; it was changed after the focus shifted to the entire family [HarryM]* D) _Little Nightmares_; it was changed because Keane hated this title [HarryM]* E) None of the above; the panel was always called _The Family Circus_ [kipw] Cool, Dave! [Emru]* F) What's wrong with Billy? [DaveM.]* THis is btter than that bar trivia game [Robair]* f) Want some tape to put this on your fridge, Grandma? [DaveM.]* G) Awww.. [HarryM]* Time's up! [HarryM]* All except Emru knew it was called The Family Circle. [kipw] H) Kill Them All. [DaveM.]* I)Hans, The Friendly Bus Driver [HarryM]* (PC World should get Bil Keane to do a strip for us.,) [kipw] That Emru! He is not OF The Body! [Robair]* j) Natural Born Jeffy [Emru]* Aargh! That was my first guess! [HarryM]* Pulp PJ [kipw] It was the seventh geometrical shape Keane tried out... [HarryM]* Question eight... [Robair]* Barfyfornia [HarryM]* QUESTION EIGHT [HarryM]* THE LITERARY WORLD [HarryM]* What is John Updike's connection with comics? [HarryM]* A) Updike's father, Samuel Updike, was a popular sports cartoonist in New York during the 1930s [HarryM]* B) Updike briefly wrote _Old Money_, a short-lived comic panel in the 1960s [HarryM]* C) Updike sued Al Capp over John Upchuck, an unflattering satire of him who appeared in _Li'l Abner_ [HarryM]* D) Updike was a cartoonist for his college newspaper, and remains a comics fan to this day [HarryM]* E) Updike wrote several episodes of the 1960s _Batman_ TV show, under the pseudonym of Al Cartwright [kipw] F) Bugs Bunny used to like to say "What's Updike?" all the time. [HarryM]* Time's up! [HarryM]* Dave and Kip knew that John was a college cartoonist. [Robair]* G) He wrote for Wimmen';s Comics and didn't have to change his name! [DaveM.]* Actually he did change his name. Robair. He felt silly when everyone called him "Trina". [HarryM]* Kip <-- I'm so tempted to make an off-color joke involing k.d. laing... [kipw] Ooh, robair... [kipw] ...have some puppy medicine... [HarryM]* ...but I won't. next quesiton coming up in a sec. [DaveM.]* I have just now gotten Robair's joke. [HarryM]* QUESTION NINE [HarryM]* DISNEY [HarryM]* What is Music Land? [HarryM]* A) A compilation animated feature hastily put together in the 1950s to fill out Disney's contract with RKO [HarryM]* B) A section of the original Disneyland that was quickly torn down and replaced with Frontierland [HarryM]* C) It was one of several proposed names for Disneyland before it opened, along with Disneylandia USA [HarryM]* D) It was a famous phonograph album of 1948, featuring Nat King Cole's versions of Disney songs [HarryM]* E) It was the nickname for the building on the Disney studio lot where all music was recorded [DaveM.]* Of course, the real answer is not there. [DaveM.]* It was a Silly Symphony in 1936. [HarryM]* Time's up... [kipw] I threw in a guess, since I didn't see the cartoon as an option. [HarryM]* Well, it's true that it was *also* a Silly Symphony short. [Emru]* The Silly Symphony was the one with the two kingdoms, right? [HarryM]* But the only correct listing I provided was A) [DaveM.]* Yes Sir! The Isle Of Jazz, and the other one. [kipw] There's a couple of pieces of art from it in the Abrams book. [kipw] The Isle of Symphony, I think. [HarryM]* Which Robair and Emru got. [Emru]* Right. I saw it for the first time last year. [HarryM]* Would we like a rundown on the scores so far? [kipw] Sure. [DaveM.]* Separated by the Sea of Discord. [kipw] Then these four guys came through in a yellow submarine. [DaveM.]* "Ask me some baseball questions, Don!" [kipw] He's pumped! [HarryM]* It's very close: [HarryM]* Dave leads with seven right, everyone else has six right. [HarryM]* Here's question ten... [HarryM]* QUESTION TEN [HarryM]* ANIMATED COMMERCIALS [HarryM]* Which of the following groups correctly lists the members of Cap'n Crunch's crew? [HarryM]* A) Seadog, Alf, Gwendolyn, Salty, Carlyle, Pirate Pete [HarryM]* B) Seadog, Alf, Brunhilde, Carlyle, Dave, Smedley [HarryM]* C) Seadog, Saltwater Sue, Dave, Smedley, Cannonball [HarryM]* D) Seadog, Alf, Brunhilde, Smedley, Teddy, Critter [HarryM]* E) None of the above [kipw] F) Crunchberry Beast and Wallace the Waffle Whiffer [Emru]* F) Flopsy, Mopsy, and Ahab. [Robair]* F) Lola, Patricia, Ana, Maty (he's been at sea TOO long) [HarryM]* Time's up! [HarryM]* Dave and Robair have obviously been eating too much cereal: B) is right. [kipw] Smedley? I don't remember any Smedley, and I read all the comics as they came out, in the boxes. [DaveM.]* We overdosed on that stuff when we were kids. And it took my blood sugar 24 years to catch up! [Emru]* All I remembered was Smedley. [HarryM]* Smedley was the elephant, Kip. [DaveM.]* I remembered Dave. Because Capn Crunch once said, "Like I always say, Dave" in one of the comercials. [kipw] You said the Original crew. Smedley was from Peanut Butter Crunch. That didn't come out for eyars. [kipw] Years. [HarryM]* Also: at least one ad tried to give the crew a little ethnic diversity with a Black kid as a crew member. But I don't know his name. [kipw] Does anyone remember Magnolia Bulkhead, their original foe-ess? [Robair]* Did anyone see that SNL sketch last night which just listed strange names for black children klike Kaopectate, Riboflavin and Kmart? STUPID! [kipw] Anyway, Smedley wasn't original. [HarryM]* Yes! I have a video tape chock full of Capn Crunch commercials, which includes Magnolia. [kipw] oops. [Emru]* I don't even turn on the TV, and I say ""Why bother anymore?" [HarryM]* The original crew was Mr. Spock, Uhura, Scotty... [Robair]* I like "House of Buggin'" a lot better. And Kip and Dave knew that Chon is 88 and, I believe, the longest running NY contributor since the dea of [HarryM]* George Price. [DaveM.]* Steve Day is on my computer saying "We got a great fax from Dave Mackey" whenever my fax software fires up. [HarryM]* Who is Steve Day? [kipw] I'll miss George Price. Calvin?
[DaveM.]* Did you guys know that”Mike Danger” has been cancelled? It is
finishing up in a few weeks.
[kipw] ?Well, the little girl is a dialectical materialist.
[HarryM]* I think the bunny thinks but doesn’t speak. And he is a real rabbit,
not a doll.
[HarryM]* But the strip is definitely Calvin-influenced.
[HarryM]* I never saw Mike Danger in the first place…
[DaveM.]* He’s going to comic books.
[Robair]* He’s going to be in our paper for the next three weeks, and that

It shows a Seal enjoying a Club Soda. [Robair]* I said it was C, but nobody confirmed it. [kipw] Well, not in so many words, but he said it was the ghost. [DaveM.]* Of course it's too late for a "Club Soda, Not Seal" sticker. His face looks like he's beenout Clubbing too long. [HarryM]* Didn;t you see me say the following: [HarryM]* [HarryM]* Lazo was one of the Ghostly Trio. [HarryM]* Was this a Pogo sticker? [Robair]* Beats me...I'm sorto of half aware. [HarryM]* IS _The Sound of Music_ on? I was watching _Annie_ earlier this evening... [HarryM]* ?(Which I've never forgiven for not crediting Harold Gray in any way.) [DaveM.]* I wanted to know about sheet music programs. How to make them. [kipw] NBC is showing it with the 29 minutes they usually cut. [DaveM.]* Reallly? I thought NBC was showing it complete. [HarryM]* Eidelweiss...Eidelweiss... [kipw] Well, Dave, I'm using "MusicTyme," which is on a CD. [HarryM]* (I'd rather thee TSOM with *more* footage cut out.) [HarryM]* ] [Robair]* brb [kipw] Of course I cheated. I threw the game, like Emru. [HarryM]* Kip says he got question 10 right, which I had him down as not getting. Does anyone have alog handy (not that it matters in the standings)... [kipw] Anyway, Dave, the board works with my MIDI keyboard and Sound Blaster 16. [kipw] It's Lo-og, it's Lo-og, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood! [DaveM.]* My buffer doesn't go back that far. [kipw] I can't look until it's all over. Still, it's moot anyway. [DaveM.]* Kip -- I'm looking for something to make sheet music from scratch, such as from an arrangement or freehand. [HarryM]* Do we want to break up the prizes? [kipw] Dave, that's what I did with the Dudley Do-Right. I used the MIDI keyboard and... [DaveM.]* First prize is a free membership in APATOONS. [kipw] ...computer keyboard to input the notes. They can also be grabbed and placed from a palette. [DaveM.]* (Really useful gift.) [HarryM]* First prize is an original cel and matching background from Pinocchio. [HarryM]* Oops, I was just daydreaming... [DaveM.]* Not useful at Drug Emporium. [DaveM.]* How about the Dudley Do-Right Drug Emporium? Of course, Nell loved Dudley but Dudly loved Horse. [kipw] (I know, you're all watching SOUND OF MUSIC now. The graveyard scene.) [HarryM]* First prize is actually a cel and backgroun from _The Brady Kids_ [Robair]* And fifth prize is a PEN! [Robair]* No, I'm watching something else--the worst episode of "The JEtsons" ever, "The Century's Best". [DaveM.]* That was the 65th and final episode, until the went back and did the last 10 in 1987. [HarryM]* ...Which John Kricfalusi worked on. [DaveM.]* I think Mark Young wrote it. [HarryM]* Anyhoo, here are the prizes: [kipw] He's Mark Middle-Aged now. [HarryM]* * A subscription to Animato magazine [HarryM]* * _Pogo Even Better_ (An excellent book collection of the classic strip) [HarryM]* * _Disney's the Art of Animation_ (lavish Bob Thomas book on the studio) [HarryM]* * _The Best of H.T. Webster_ (large 1951 collection of drawings by the [HarryM]* great cartoonist) [HarryM]* * _Dahl's Boston_ (terrific book of cartoons by the seasoned social [HarryM]* cartoonist) [HarryM]* * _Duckman_ comics #1 [HarryM]* * _Krusty Comics_ #1 [HarryM]* * _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ (reprint of the classic adaptation_ [HarryM]* Dave gets to pick three of these. [DaveM.]* For $115, Ill take the Ceramic Dalmatian. [kipw] Arf! [HarryM]* Leapin' Lizards! [DaveM.]* No, I'll take the Thomas, the Pogo, and the Webster. [kipw] Rather, "Woof! Woof! Hi, I'm Rags!" [DaveM.]* And Mr. Mustard in the parlor with the switchblade. [HarryM]* OK, Kip: pick two of the remaining prizes... [DaveM.]* "That's right! And if it weren't for you meddling kids, I;d have gotten away with it!" [kipw] Well, even though it means admitting I don't have one already... [kipw] I'll take the Animato sub. And Snow White. I already have Dahl. [HarryM]* That's _Colonel_ Mustard to you...Mr. Mustard is from _Yello Submarine_. [kipw] (And Webster, too. Great choice, Dave!) [DaveM.]* Anyone here have an extra Animato! 29 to spare? Duquette never sent me a comp of that issue, with Lantz on the cover. [HarryM]* Actually, I have *two* copies of Dahl and Webster. Which is why they ended up a prizes here. [kipw] I was just re-reading the Webster collection again. [kipw] I would like to find another of his titles, but that's the only one I ever see. [HarryM]* I might, Dave...I'll check. [HarryM]* Robair: pick two prizes... [DaveM.]* I just got 30 and 31 in the mail Friday. [kipw] Take the pen! the pen! [Robair]* I will select Duckman and Krusty. [HarryM]* (Did anyone watch the Simpsons tonight? A good episode...) [HarryM]* OK! Thanks and congratualtions to all. [Robair]* Mom watched it--she can never sit through a whole episode. [kipw] Yeah. Wish I could have stayed tuned for THE CRITIC, but Fox, in its finite wisdom... [HarryM]* The prizes will probably go out really quickly, unless I take them to SF and mail from there. [Robair]* I have yet to see "George and Junior" tonight though. [DaveM.]* Great job, folks! Thanks for making my dying days on BIX quite memorable. It's been a great 5-1/2 years but it's time to move along. [HarryM]* _The Critic_ is my favorite modern animated sitcom, except for the best episodes of _The Simpsons_. [kipw] Dave, any other questions on the music? [HarryM]* Yes, Dave, and pelase keep in touch via e-mail! [DaveM.]* I'll see you all on the Internet. [DaveM.]* Not quite now, Kip. [Robair]* Of course, it isn't goodbye for me, but Bix was truly lucky to have Dave. [DaveM.]* We shall. [HarryM]* "Now it's time to say goodbye to sll our company..." [Robair]* Goodnit, everyone! [HarryM]* Well, one Mackey is better than none... [DaveM.]* THe plug will be pulled as soon as I make arrangements with my new local access provider. [Robair]* (fading into view) [Robair]* ... [DaveM.]* Nite, Robair! [kipw] Night, Robair! [HarryM]* You have big shoes to fill, Robair, but your feet are probably just the right size. [HarryM]* Good night, Robiar! [Emru]* So long, Dave. It was a great 5 1/2 years. Robair, you've got big shoes to fill. (They're cartoon shoes, after all.) [DaveM.]* Hey, don't forget... Robair and I once bought the same exact pair of shoes 70 miles apart one day. [kipw] You each bought one! [DaveM.]* Black Fayvas, size 9. Identical style. [DaveM.]* He bought is near home; I got mine in Hoboken. [DaveM.]* Bye everyone! Bye BIX! [kipw] Bye, Dave! [HarryM]* Good night, Dave! [DaveM.]* Nite all! [Emru]* Good night, Dave! [kipw] Well, it's getting sort of quiet. [HarryM]* Any other news, anyone? [kipw] Well, there's my piano lessons. [HarryM]* Taking or giving? [kipw] Just taking. There's things I really need to improve. [kipw] Seems to be going well, so far. [HarryM]* I have a copy of _The Miracle_ piano-lesson software, but can't get it to work with my computer. [HarryM]* I think my MIDI port is busted. [kipw] It's a shame about Dave. I didn't see what the board was like before, but it sit seems far from dead to me. [Emru]* A question: Should I post a review of the Keroppi Day Hopper to the conference? [HarryM]* Sure! [kipw] It's always something. Since we got the sound blaster in, the scanner's dead. [kipw] It took the 5-inch drive with it, it seems. [HarryM]* Well, it's far from dead, but activity is way down from four or five years ago. (It's a BIX-wide problem.) [kipw] I'm kind of lucky that I can just enter BIX from the Internet. Wht does everyone else have to do? Phone in long distance? [Emru]* Yep. I remember when CBIX was first made public -- despite the costlier billing structure at the time, it was impossible to get a word in edgewise. [HarryM]* I dial into a local computer (BIX is based in Cambridge.) [Emru]* I connect via Tymnet or Sprintnet. [kipw] Yeah, we're on Telnet. [HarryM]* I'll have to figure out the best way to get to BIX from San Francisco. [kipw] Actually, "Beavis and Butt-Head" was pretty funny. Their teacher is telling them about the joys of animation, and the limitless possibilities, and they're not moving. [kipw] I was in San Francisco just ten years ago, for a convention. [HarryM]* Well, seeing as I have dso much work to do before I leave for SF, I should probably sign off for the night. [Emru]* I've never been. [kipw] The only time I was back to California since me infink days. [HarryM]* I like SF. Especially the coast and wine country. [Emru]* I'd better call it a night as well; long day ahead of me tomorrow. [HarryM]* It;s just that I lioke Boston too, and friends and family are here. [kipw] It was nice, all right. Well, I think I'll probably go to bed soon, too. [kipw] Good night, everyone. Thanks for the swell time. [HarryM]* OK, good night all! [Emru]* G'night, folks. [kipw] Unlike last week, there was not wall of busy signal keeping me out for two hours! [kipw] Bye for now.
