This topic is for discussion about how to use BIX’s Internet services
within the context of the ‘animation’ forum. We’ll be talking about
things like how to look up episode guides, who to talk to “nettable”
animation personalities, and the like.
Oh, you don’t know about the Internet services? Read ask.bix/internet
#801. You’ll be glad you did.

TITLE: Mailing Lists
Internet mailing lists are much like a topic in a small BIX conference
— they encompass fairly specific topics, and everyone gets to read
what everyone else writes. The only thing is, this all takes place
in e-mail. Instead of posting your message to a specific conference,
you’d e-mail it to a central address, and an automated mailer mails
copies out to everyone subscribed to that mailing list. Compared to
Usenet newsgroups, mailing lists tend to be pretty noise-free.
There are two mailing lists I know of that members of this conference
would probably be interested in: the Miyazaki mailing list, and the
Animators’ mailing list.
Despite the name, the Miyazaki mailing list is not just for anime
(Japanese animation) produced by Hayao Miyazaki. It started out that
way, but it evolved over time into a discussion group for any kind of
anime with “artistic merit.” That is, something beyond the usual
cute girl/giant robot/slapstick work — something that has extra care
put into it, like _Wings of Honneamise_, _Arion_ or _Angel’s Egg_.
To get on the Miyazaki mailing list, send BIXmail to the list
administrator, Steven Feldman (AR******@BR*****.edu) and he’ll
set you up.
The Animators’ mailing list is for people who are animators, or who
are interested in the techniques involved in creating animation —
any kind of animation. Discussion has died down in recent weeks,
partly because of the lull that inevitably sets in after the initial
flurry of activity. We’re also doing a group animation project,
where people create an animated countdown – one person to a number –
no matter what computer platform is being used. Some people are
doing it all digitally, others are doing it the old-fashioned way
then scanning it, etc. These are being collated and converted to
different formats for different computers, with the results to be
made available on an ftp site (more on that later). There is some
muttering about other group projects in the future, some in non-
digital media.
To join the Animators’ mailing list, send mail with a subject of
“subscribe” (without quotes) to animate-request%it***@ds*.com.
If that doesn’t work, send mail to animate-owner%it***@ds*.com,
which will go to a human being who’ll straighten things out.
I don’t know of any other mailing lists that relate to animation,
but if I find any — or find someplace that has an index of mailing
lists available — I’ll post about it here. If you come across
something in your explorations in Internet-space, let us know about
it here!

TITLE: Newsgroups — to and fro
Here’s a few ways you can participate in Internet newsgroups from BIX…
If you’re only interested in reading, try this method. At the : prompt of
BIX, enter ‘telnet ecosys.drdr.virginia.edu’. (Without the quotes of course.)
When asked to log in, enter ‘gopher’. You will probably have to answer a
question about your terminal type, then you will want to select two
consecutive menu choices of 8. (One for ‘gopher-accessible services’ and the
other for ‘USENET News’. The menu selections are made by typing in the
number and pressing enter to move the selection arrow, then pressing enter
again to enact that selection, or by pressing a space bar to go to the
next page.)
The net-news is organized in hierarchical nested menus (such
as selecting ‘alt.’ gives you all possible choices for the second part of the
name). You might have to hunt around to find the selections you’re interested
in. You then select individual articles to read.
A caveat: the ‘gopher’ account is read-only and is not configurable to
your favorite newsgroups, so you really can’t ‘join’ newsgroups this way like
you can join conferences on BIX or post to newsgroups from here. (More
information on this method is found in ask.bix/internet #1155, posted by Kirk
Odle.)
If you want to try leaving a message in a newsgroup, try this method
also recently discussed in ask.bix/internet. You would send your article via
e-mail to
some hot “Simpsons” news, you would e-mail it to
al********************@de****.com — simple, eh?
(I tried it using a method Emru once discussed — via e-mail to

Yup, it turned out that the problem was on Ecosys’s end, not mine.
I’m enjoying browsing through all the animation and comics stuff that can
be found there, but the interface is pretty clunky. It takes an awful lot
of jumping from menu to menu and pressing enter repeatedly to make your
way around. I’m trying to automate the process with macros in my
communications package. (Eventually, BIX will have much easier access
to the USENET newsgroups.)

Here’s a list of most Internet mailing lists even tangentially related
to animation or comics. This includes Disney, computer animation,
Christian imagery in animation, you name it.
These are excerpted from the index of publicly accessible mailing lists,
currently maintained by Stephanie da Silva (ar*****@ta*****.com).
comix
Contact: co***********@wo***.com (Elizabeth Lear Newman)
Purpose: Intended for talking about non-mainstream and independent
comic books. We generally don’t talk about superheroes much, and
we don’t talk about Marvel Mutants at all.
disney-afternoon
Contact: ra*****************@ta*****.com (Stephanie da Silva)
Purpose: Discussion of the Disney Afternoon and other related
topics. This is a very high-volume, low-noise mailing list.
It is moderated and also available in digested form. At this
writing, there are no plans to gateway the list to the
alt.fan.disney.afternoon newsgroup, though some informational
messages may be cross-posted.
disney-comics
Contact: di*******************@st*****.se (Per Starb{ck)
Purpose: Discussion of Disney comics.
exhibitionists
Contact: ex********************@jv**.net
Purpose: Primarily for managers and/or projectionists, but open
also to anyone working in a cinema or film society, etc. Anyone’s
welcome to join, but the conversation is mainly about things that
only cinema workers (and in some cases only projectionists) would
be interested in, so if this isn’t you, think twice about joining.
In short, a forum where someone can ask “So how was work at the
theater today?” and actually understand what you’re talking about.
filmmakers
Contact: fi****************@gr*****.gov
Purpose: The Filmmakers’ Mailing List deals with all aspects of
motion picture production, with an emphasis on technical issues.
Heavily stressed are construction and design issues for those
working on tight budgets. It should be emphasized that the subject

If you try to request nn now, the BIX computer spits back at you with the
phrase “No privilege.” And this is using the lastest TESTBIX, which is
3.31.1.33. (A little known fact is that anyone can log onto TESTBIX, just by
specifying bix:.07 at the “please log in:” prompt.)
So at least BIX knows that something is supposed to be happening when nn

Someone calling himself “rabbit” had a cron program automatically
postings a message to the alt.tv.tiny-toons group about once a day.
The message telling where you could send mail to receive the Mortimer
Story would usually show up in groups of three. Then suddenly instead
of one post per day they started arriving in a flood. I believe at its
worst I downloaded a message packet with atleast 400 coppies of the
same message from Mr. rabbit. There is some discussion of the incident
over in news.admin.misc.
This is one of the worst problems with reading Usenet. You can be
going along reading a group then suddenly you get hit with big posts.
I remember one case where someone uploaded the complete script for
a tv show ( or maybe a movie). I started reading soc.history the other
day but had to drop it. Most of the posts were a flame war in which
one of the combatants was bombing everyone with almost identical posts.
I know kill files are supposed to help this but you cannot anticipate
everything that is going to happen.
– Robert
p.s. Reading news.admin.misc is interesting. It makes you wonder
how in the world the internet functions.

TITLE: New anime-related mailing list
Newsgroups: rec.arts.anime
From: an*****@an**.fi (Lemon List)
X-Anonymously-To: rec.arts.anime
Organization: Anonymous contact service
Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1993 03:17:17 UTC
Subject: “Lemon List” Announcement
******************ANNOUNCING: THE “LEMON LIST”**********************
Looking for a place to exchange lemon fanfic? Look no further! The Lemon
List (at address an*****@an**.fi) is the place to send your stories of
romance and/or eroticism that feature characters from anime and/or manga.
Join the Lemon List by sending in one fanfic and you will receive everyone
else’s submissions automatically and anonymously in your electronic mailbox.
Some examples of stories that would be welcome on the list:
You and Madoka go out on a date.
The Puma sisters have a lesbian affair.
Since Lisa outranks Rick, they decide that he should be her love slave (com
plete with bondage, etc.)
Lum and Ataru finally tie the knot.
A little-known effect of the Jusenkyo pool is that Ranma-chan develops an
interest in guys and she decides to sleep with as many guys as possible.
Captain Harlock rescues you and you fall in love.
As you can see, stories can be written from either a male or female
perspective and you can make them as clean or as raunchy as you like. A
long as you stay within the rules (given below), I will not censor your
work.
Ground rules are as follows:
1) All main characters must be from an anime or manga. Exceptions: you can
include yourself as a main character if you want and non-anime/manga
characters may appear in BRIEF cameos. (Sorry Star Trek fans.)
2) No stories featuring nonconsentual sex (i.e. rape) will be accepted.
3) No stories featuring sex with children will be accepted. The age of
consent will be set at 14, which is the legal age in Maine and Iowa.
4) Stories can be as raunchy or as clean as you like.
5) When you join, you must state that you are at least 18 years of age (I
have no way of verifying this, but it should be understood that minors are
NOT welcome.)
6) Stories can be long or short, but they must at least make sense. A
one-sentence submission saying “I want to **** the Dirty Pair” would not be
of interest to the general list membership.
Your submission to the address an*****@an**.fi will be automatically
“anonomyzed” and I won’t know who you are. If you WANT to be credited as
the author of your work, then include a specific request to that effect.
The stories from the Lemon List may NOT be posted to FTP sites or
newsgroups or other listservers. An exception is granted to local BBS’s who
archive them for their members as long as they credit the Lemon List as the
source and include the list’s address (an*****@an**.fi) so that their
members may submit their own stories to the Lemon List.
I will archive all submissions, and new members will receive all submissions
that have been received up to that time, as well as any future submissions
the list receives. Once you send in one story, you are a member until you
request otherwise.
Even if you don’t think you have a talent for this sort of thing, you can
make an earnest effort. Noone will know who you are (unless you request
otherwise), so there’s no reason to be embarrassed. Any honest effort, even
if it’s just a single scene, will be welcome.

on business, except for a day here and there, since, oh, July.
Not a good time to start a high volume mailing list.
I’m in town for a while, and they’ve been running on autopilot, and seem to
be working ok, so I’m willing to announce them.
They are:
an********@so*****.edu
an**********@so*****.edu
an***********@so*****.edu
To subscribe, send mail to “li******@so*****.edu”
The message should contain a line that says
subscribe listname Your Name
In my case, to subscribe to anime-info, I’d say:
subscribe anime-info Ron Jarrell
You should be able to subscribe to more than one at a time.
Archives are not currently kept; though that might be a future
addition.
Also, for those having trouble with an*****@vt***.edu, you can
try subscribeing to an*****@so*****.edu instead. People on bitnet
might want to stay on the vtvm1 list, as vtvm1 is on bitnet, and solaris
is not.

TITLE: You might have noticed…
That the animation conference now has a ‘gopher’ topic. This is to allow
access to the Internet ‘gopher’ service. How is this different from the main
‘gopher’ command? Well, over the course of the next month or so, we’ll be
tailoring this ‘gopher’ to offer animation-specific items. Give it a try!

TITLE: Restructuring of animation newsgroups
There has been some talk of late of restructuring the animation newsgroups
that deal with specific programs under the heading alt.animation. This would
include, say, alt.animation.simpsons or alt.animation.ren-and-stimpy. There
are also proposals out to organize all the Warner Bros. stuff together, in a
new newsgroup tentatively called alt.animation.warner-bros that would have
the Tiny Toons and Animaniacs subgroups plus possible subgroups for Batman,
Taz-Mania, and the classic WB animation.

TRANSFORMERS MUSH: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Though we are not technically “open” yet, we are looking
for builders, coders, and players. There are many feature
characters still available, both Autobots and Decepticons,
and since this is the beginning, many building tasks are
also still open.
When TransformersMUSH is fully open, we will have operational
transformation and melee/missile combat systems, based on the
toy box statistics. Combiner teams are included and available.
The storyline of TransformersMUSH is separate from both comics
and television/movie continuity, but including elements from
both. There are as yet no plans to feature the Transformers:
Generation 2 storyline, but this may change in the future.
The address of Transformers MUSH is as follows:
192.216.46.99 1064
I don’t currently have the other format of the address, but
if you absolutely need it, send email to 59*******@se****.edu
(Optimus_Prime, the head wizard) and ask for it.
NOTE: We currently lack filecard quotes/profiles for many of
the later Transformers, including Ultra Magnus. If you think
you can help, please get in touch with myself or Optimus Prime
at the above address.
Thank you, and I hope to see you on Transformers MUSH.

Lisa Renee Wood: Announcing: Guide to Film and Video Resources on the Internet
This message is being cross-posted to several listservs,
and to many USENET news groups. Please excuse any
duplication.
A few weeks back we posted requests to several listservs
and news groups regarding film and video resources on the
Internet. We received many helpful replies for which we are
extremely thankful! Our guide, _Film and Video Resources
on the Internet_, is now complete and includes information
on many resources such as listservs and USENET news groups
on topics related to film and video, as well as film review
databases, filmographies, etc.
Our intention in compiling this guide was to locate as
many resources as possible in the subject area of film and
video which are available on the Internet. While it is not a
definitive source, it is a good place to start if you are looking
for information about film and video. We intend to maintain
this guide as an ongoing project and would encourage any
comments you have.

comments you have.
The guide is now available but since it is 72K we chose
not to post it on the listservs and news groups. While we will
be happy to send a copy (absolutely free) through e-mail to
anyone interested, we wanted to warn everyone that it is a
very big file and that people are better off accessing it in the
following ways:

_Film and Video Resources on the Internet_ was created

Library Studies. It is the final project for the course ILS 606
Internet: Resource Discovery and Organization. This guide and
numerous other subject -oriented Internet resource guides are
available from the Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented

TITLE: NN’s up and running!
NN, BIX’s newsreader for use in following Usenet newsgroups, is now
available for use by all BIXen. (Type nn at the : prompt to use it.)
It’s relatively easy to use — type ? for a list of commands — and
is a much more straightforward tool for reading rec.arts.animation
and all the other cartoon- and comics-themed newsgroups than anything
we’ve had before.
If you’ve got questions about using it, check out the netnews topic
in the internet conference — or, especially if the questions
related specifically to the comics/cartoons areas, ask them right
here.

TITLE: So you’re the one!
Today’s New York Times has an article about Laurence Canter, the
Phoenix lawyer who has been running what has amounted to commercial
messages on the Internet. You may have seen the messages on the Net
slugged “Green Card Lottery- Final One”. He’s the originator of that
message, which has earned some 30,000 “flames”.
The company which managed Mr. Canter’s account, Internet
Direct, has denied him further net access.

TITLE: Comics on the Web — Via BIX!
There’s a lot of comics- and cartoon-related information
available on the World Wide Web, and now that BIX has introduced
access to the Web, we animation conference members can get at it.
To see what’s available start up the BIX Web browser by entering
“lynx” at the main BIX prompt. Then press the space bar a few times
until you see a list of choices that includes [6] Popular WWW Sites.
Type 6 and press Enter to select that, and you’ll get a menu that
includes [4] Comics on the WWW. Type 4 and press Enter, and you’ll
get to another menu that lets you venture around many comics-themed
Web sites.
Lynx is a text-only browser, so you won’t get the fully graphical
access that some of these sites really need. Still, it’s a great
addition to BIX’s animation/comics offerings — enjoy!

hundred links to verify before I put them on the list.

TITLE: Mailing lists
Excerpted from Stephanie da Silva’s list of mailing lists:
Movies-seivoM
Contact: Mo***********@ki*****.com
Purpose: Movies-seivoM, the Self-Referential Movies Mailing List,
recommends and discusses movies that “break the 4th wall” and display
a more-overt-than-usual awareness of themselves as movies. Movies
about Hollywood, movies where someone appears “as himself,”
movies-within-movies, movies that play with genre conventions or
comment on the phenomenon of stardom, are all fertile territory.
We’re particularly interested in older movies, cartoons, silent films,
foreign films, shorts and documentaries, and how this kind of recursion
showed up in anecdotes, still photographs, fan magazines, etc. We hope
for thoughtful brief essays rather than scattershot references. Please
avoid Mel Brooks movies unless you have some stunning insights.

Disney Television Animation
Contact: ra*****************@ta*****.com (Stephanie da Silva)
Purpose: Discussion of Walt Disney Television Animation with a focus
on the Disney Afternoon. The ranger-list is a very high-volume,
low-noise mailing list. This list is moderated.
This is not a generic Disney discussion list, so if you’re looking
for tips on visiting the Magic Kingdom or Feature Animation lists,
you won’t find them here. Despite the topic and the misconception
that ‘animations are just for children,’ the ranger-list is a serious,
adult discussion list.
The Disney Afternoon is a series of animated television cartoons,
often shown in a single two-hour block during the afternoon. It
has included shows such as DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop,
Aladdin the Series, and Gargoyles.
Unsolicited mailings are neither accepted nor welcomed to this list.

1996 NYU Animation Festival Opens April 19th
Social commentary, sight gags, dark horror stories, and flights-of-fancy
abstractions are some of the subjects of the films to be featured at the
Sixteenth Annual Animation Festival of New York University’s Tisch School
of the Arts.
To be presented on Friday, April 19th, 8PM at Tishman Auditorium,
Vanderbilt Hall 40 Washington Square South, the festival premieres films
made by undergraduate and graduate students in the school’s animation
program. Tickets are $6 general admission, $3 for students with
I.D., free to NYU Film students, and can be purchased on the day of the
festival.
Both finished animated shorts with soundtracks, and silent works-in-progress
accompanied by live piano player Stuart Oderman will be showcased. Techniques
of the student-produced films range from stop-motion puppets, to
traditional cel animation, to xerography, to 3D computer animation.
For more information, call (212) 998-1781, or visit the NYU Animation
website at http://found.cs.nyu.edu/animation/
________________________________
A few people on this list will have films in the festival, including me,
so if any of you are in town and free that night for an hour or so,
please come on by. I thanked the list in my credits 🙂

That Feiffer strip, reprinted from 1974, was a classic.
The _New York Times_ *has* printed special comics from time to time, including
a _Pogo_ strip in the 1970s. And of course, it’s the home of Al Hirschfeld, one
of the greatest of all cartoonists. (Hirschfeld has three drawings in today’s
paper, apparently compensating for the fact that he doesn’t contribute every
single week these days.)

Felix! Felix the Cat!” (played by Paul Whiteman’s jazz band!)
I have also updated the News section in several places,
including adding a picture of Fantagraphics’ Felix newspaper-strip
collection coming in August! (Clicking on the picture will tell you
what’s in the book.)
So go to it, Felix fans! As usual the URL is:

There’s now an official Chuck jones Web page, located, of course, at
www.chuckjones.com. It features biographical information, an
online newsletter, and catalogs of his limited edition cels
(complete with nice on-screen reproductions).
