Highlights and main events –
The 3rd. Oslo Animation Festival
25. – 28. April 1996
The festival program includes the following:
Film screenings:
Films in competition
Oslo Animation Festival 496 will present about 200 films. More than 1/3
of the films are produced in the Nordic countries. This year we
emphasise the Nordic profile by arranging a competition for Nordic and
Baltic animators. An international jury has been invited to judge the
films, and five prizes will be awarded the films in competition will be
screened in a separate program .
“Crumb”
– directed by Terry Zwigoff, has been a hit at festivals around the
world, and will be screened for the first time in Norway during Oslo
Animation Festival ’96. The film won the Grand Prize for best
documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, 1995. This funny and often
disturbing documentary portrays the underground artist Crumb, and
introduces us to his eccentric family.
Shot over a period of six years, Zwigoff uses interviews with the
artist, his family, colleagues, critics, and ex-lovers, along with
footage of his work, to present a vivid picture of Crumb’s obsessions,
and of the powerful visions he has created with them. Crumb has produced
an enormous body of work; his comic work is more widely read today than
ever. Critics have come to recognise him as an extraordinary talent, and
his work is now finding its way into museums.
Zwigoff’s initial interest in making the film stemmed from his
friendship with Crumb, and his long-held belief that Crumb is one of the
great artists of our time.
Robert Crumb is a cult hero, an artist whose work is collected as fine
art, and an iconoclast, a spokesperson for those who began questioning
authority in the 1960’s. Well known in Europe as well as Japan, crumb’s
work is reprinted in costly fine art editions that have given him an
artistic credibility abroad that has yet to be matched in America.
Aardman Animation
“The Wrong Trousers” and “Creature Comforts” (among others) have already
seduced the Norwegian audience. This year we proudly present the newest
Wallace and Gromit-film “The Close Shave” (Oscar nominated 1996).
“What’s Pig and Pop” and two other new surprises are also included in
the program.
Filmtecknarna
From one of Northern Europe’s most inventive and vigorous studios- we
are happy to present new episodes about the stereotypical Swede –
Lennart. Lennart presents his semi-fascist and perverted tips about
trivial things. With the best intentions – of course. From the same
director (Magnus Carlsson) comes “Sweden”, where the Swedes let us
participate in their opinions about this and that.
Dennis Nyback (USA)
visited the festival in ’95 with “Bad Bugs Bunny”. This year he’s back
with new classics. Films by Max and Dave Fleischer; the brothers who
created Betty Boop and Popeye, will be presented. We have been promised
“Der F|hrer’s Face”, a “propaganda” film from Disney about the second
world war starring Donald Duck. We are also looking forward to Tex
Avery’s “Red Hot Riding Hood”, described as one of Avery’s masterpieces
about sex and violence.
New international films
animated masterpieces have been picked from other festivals, and will
be screened in separate programs. In addition to the films in
competition , the festival includes a guest program, a historical
program and the features TOY STORY and CRUMB.
“The chicken from outer space”. (Oscar nominated 1996.)
– by John Dillworth (USA). Last year we screened the popular “The Dirdy
Birdy” by the same director. Dillworth makes films for MTV and works on
own projects simultaneously. Humour and strong personalities
characterise his films.
Cartoons
Gary Larson could unfortunately not make it this year either, but the
filmed. version of his cartoons will be shown. “Gary Larson tales from
the far side” is a 30 minutes series of dark, gloomy, funny and sick
stories from Larson’s universe. The films are filled with cows, insects,
wolves, snakes and rebel sheep that keep on returning during the course
of the story. – Transferred successfully to the screen by Canadian Marv
Newland, who will be present at Oslo Animation Festival.
From Palestinian – administered – areas comes for the first time an
exhibition and a new cartoonbook from Khalil Abu Arafeh made specially
for Oslo Animation Festival 1996.
Norwegian cartoon strips.
Guests and jury members
Marv Newland
Absurd, black humour characterise the films of Canadian Marv Newland. He
has worked with animation for almost 30 years, and his debut – “Bambi
meets Godzilla”- became an immediate cult-classic. He was chosen to
animate Gary Larson’s drawings because the two have a similar approach
to humour. Marv Newland has also worked with cartoons, and Robert Crumb
is one of his favourites. Newland will present his own program during
the festival. His animation studio – Rocketship Ltd. – will also present
a separate program.
Paul Driessen
is considered one of animation’s grand masters. Driessen is Dutch, but
lives and works in Canada. He has produced animation films for more than
30 years, and started his career as on “Yellow Submarine” in London.
Driessen has received awards for many of his films, and he presents his
own program at the festival.
Abby Terkuhle
Creative Director at MTV USA. He also works as a producer, and is one of
the people behind the MTV-series “Beavis and Butt-head”. A selection of
programs and shorts from MTV will be screened – among others “Beavis and
Butthead – Animation Sucks.”
Aleksandr Tatarsky
Animator at the Russian studios Pilot Moscow Animation Studio and Second
Frog. Films from these studios have received numerous awards, and have
been received with great success at festivals world wide. Tatarsky’s
“Gagarin” is Oscar nominated this year.
Piotr Dumala
From Poland we have invited Piotr Dumala. Apart from attacking Polish
society by seeing “the humourous in the evil”, his films are highly
respected from an artistic perspective. Dumala has developed a plaster
technique which make his films to a genre in themselves within the
tradition of animation.
Bettina Bjvrnberg
From Finland have studied art and art history in Florence, Italy. In
19982 she moved to Finland and started working with cut-out animation at
the national broadcasting. OY Yleisradio. While working ever since that,
she has been studying art history, philosophy and graphic art. Oslo
Animation Festival will screen five of Bjvrnbergs films. Currently a new
series of 13 x 104 is under work and will finished in 1997.
Cinemas: Sentrum Scene and The Film House in Oslo .
We look forward to welcoming you to the 3rd Oslo Animation Festival
1996.

documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, 1995.
“Der Fhrer’s Face”, a “propaganda” film from Disney about the second
world war starring Donald Duck.
Norwegian Forum for cartoons will be present with their annual stand.
Earni Special from cartoon publishers Bladkompaniet present four new
Norwegian cartoon strips.
Bettina Bjrnberg
From Finland have studied art and art history in Florence, Italy. In
19982 she moved to Finland and started working with cut-out animation at
the national broadcasting. OY Yleisradio. While working ever since that,
she has been studying art history, philosophy and graphic art. Oslo
Animation Festival will screen five of Bj rnbergs films. Currently a new
series of 13 x 10 is under work and will finished in 1997.
Cinemas: Sentrum Scene and The Film House in Oslo .
We look forward to welcoming you to the 3rd Oslo Animation Festival
1996.

TITLE: Comics + Hooters
I think this is one of the signs of Armageddon, but I’m not sure. From the
pages of the latest Previews comics catalogue:
When You think “Hooters,” you probably don’t immediately think of comic
books. If anything, you think of the phenomenally popular restaurant which
has, in the space of 14 years, grown to 200 locations with annual sales
topping $350 million. You probably think of the controversial and
beautiful Hooters
Girls, or even the lawsuit that forced the chain to hire “Hooters Guys.”
Anything but comic books.
Think again.
Beginning this month, Cabbage Comics presents Halle the Hooters Girl, a new
comic that follows the adventures of (aw, you guessed) Halle, a waitress at
Hooters who decks herself out in a special Hooters ensemble to take on the
forces of injustice and bad fashion. Like the real waitresses at Hooters,
Halle is 100% all-American girl-next-door. She can knock out crooks and
then take your order for a double set of extra spicy wings without missing a
beat.
The new series represents a first for the restaurant chain, which has grown
dramatically since its beginnings in 1983. With calendars, videos, and a
golf tournament (among other things) already bearing the Hooters name and
the images of the famous Hooters Girls, the comic proves that there’s always
room for a Hooters Girl.
