I don’t know if this properly belongs in the ‘sources’ topic; if it does I
hope someone will put it there. I just received something called “The Whole
Toon Catalog” and it is 48 pages of available-for-purchase videotapes of
nothing but animation. Now be advised that this is legally purchasable stuff;
none of it is bootleg (which we all know exists in quantity). But it does
run from “Abel’s Island” to “Zoom the White Dolphin” (neither of which I’ve
ever heard of); there’s a load of Beany and Cecil stuff, Betty Boop, Bugs
Bunny (uncut), lots and lots of collections of esoteric stuff. It’s not
exhaustive; it doesn’t have, for example, the Asterix movies – but it is a
good source for lots of titles. Just the thing for culturally deprived
viewers! Write to:
Whole Toon Access
4710 University Way N.E.
Seattle, WA 98105 (phone) 206-391-8747
BTW, they will ship VHS if you don’t tell them you want Beta, but apparently
they will get Beta if you request it.

TITLE: The Warner Bros. Collection…
is a slick 64-page catalog of Warner Bros. merchandise that can be
ordered by mail. This consists of everything from _Murphy Brown_
pencils to the ever-popular Quincy Jones bicycle cap, but roughly
7/8th of the stuff relates to Warner Bros. cartoon characters.
There are a lot of expensive, collectors-item type things (how
many of us are prepared to spend $400 on a Bugs Bunny jacket?), as
well as some more popularly-priced knickknacks. It’s an enjoyable
browse, and should be available by calling 1-800-223-6524.

is running this business out of his home so does not have the overhead cost
of a store. Therfore his prices are much lower than competetors. He has a
large number of CD’s in stock and a good supply of Lasr Disks. He can order
any disk you want and is willing to call you back when they come in. He can
also order just about any product, toy, etc.. that you want.

“Disney News” first published in 1965. This means they recently
celebrated their 25th anniversary as the official magazine of the
Magic Kingdom Club. I think the limited distribution keeps it
largely in the hands of MKC members, but I do snap it up if I see
it at the Disney Store.

TITLE: General Disclaimer
Most of the sources I’ve posted here are folks I’ve run into
in the process of publishing _Animato_, the magazine I did
until recently. While I’ve been in touch with most of them,
my posting information on them here is in no way an
endorsement of their service by me, let alone BIX. In the
rare cases in which I’ve actually used their service myself
or have other special knowledge of it I’ll post
references to that effect.

It bears mentioning that a large portion of central New Jersey now has a
908 area code, including Pam Martin. All 908 numbers are former 201
numbers, so if you don’t get through the first time try 908 and it should
work. (I don’t quite know how many phone numbers in /sources this affects.)

For all those feeling abandoned on this side of the PAL/NTSC -fence:
Network of European anime fans (sorry, no ‘official’ name that I know of)
have been established. The network is trying to help anime fans to get
in touch with each, build contacts, etc. Although European -based, everyone
is welcomed to join in, that is, there is no discrimination on country basis.
The network publishs a newsletter, coming out bimonthly. Subscription is
6 pounds (UK) per year for European, and about 10 to others (includes air
mail). In every issue a contact list of anime fans is published, and at least
first issue contained other useful addresses were published. Contributions
are badly needed.
If you are interested, write to the:

Emru,
I think the message was a bit old to begin with. But quoting the
address always is a good thing for european anime fans to start with.
From personal experience I can tell that the address is still current.
Helen and Steve publish the newsletter Anime UK with all sorts of
goodies for us. Also there is a directory with european fans and
fanclubs. So the network is growing.
For those european fans that are interested in what’s available
now on tape can get in contact with:
David Row

Fhirston, Malmsbury

Great Britain
He keeps a database up to date. I have a copy of that database that’s
up to date till november ’91. So you can also ask me for ‘older’ stuff.

This is a monthy magazine that reprints a month’s worth of popular
and not-so-popular strips, all from King Features Syndicate: Andy
Capp, Blondie, Hi and Lois, Hagar the Horrible, Sally Forth, Grin
and Bear It, Trudy, Tumbleweeds, Dennis the Menace, The Family
Circus, Mandrake the Magician, Popeye, Prince Valiant, and others.
Unlike _Strips_, which reprints current material, _Classic Comics_’
strips date from 1987. Despite the magazine’s title, the copy I
have has only a couple of crossword puzzles.

TITLE: Bibliography
I saw one message here (#185) that cites a general reference work on
the history of animation. Are there others either already posted or
that you may know of that aren’t?
I could also use a good reference book on “Looney Tunes” — history.
Any suggestions?
I’m going to be in Hollywood next week and will check out the bookstores
that specialize in film. Any recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks

TITLE: “Index” magazine
I’ve seen a couple of issues of a new, slim, flippant monthly that’s
geared toward merchandising, and thus full of animation news. “Index” is
put out by Fairchild Publications in NYC. Each issue is arranged so that
the articles are in alphabetical order; a cute gimmick that makes reading the
issue a serendipitous adventure. This issue (with its cover showing Batman and
Pocahontas smooching) includes “A: Animation – frame and fortune” (the article
furnished a list of upcoming projects that I put into the “silver screen”
topic), “G:Gargoyles” (a look at Disney’s SatAM series and its spinoffs), and
“R:Retail” which has more stuff about Pocahontas’s ancillaries. The first
issue of this that I saw had a cool interview with Quentin Tarentino, where
he expounded on how he wanted to see PULP FICTION lunchboxes and board games.

TITLE: When in Paris
I located a wonderful store in Paris that is part of a chain but this
location deals exclusively in comics. They have an astounding collection
of comic books (which in France are real books, i.e. hard bound), comic
related merchandise (more Tintin figurines than I have ever seen before),
and a nice collection of posters.
I picked up a collection of one-page gags from the truly demented
mind of Ptiluc. It is called Faces de Rat and defies description. The
cover art is of three rats giggling hysterically while reading a discarded
copy of Albert Camus’ La Peste.
I also brought home a copy of a new book by Hugo Pratt called “Saint-
Exupery, Le Dernier Vol” (The Last Flight). It’s a wonderful tribute to
the author of “The Little Prince.”
